3 Stars of the Weekend

***3rd Star
Zachary
Zach pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief over the weekend. He struck out 4 and looked really sharp in his first outing of the season. He will more than likely start the next game.

**2nd Star
Beverlyn
Beverlyn scored a career-high 14 points in her team's victory this Saturday, including a beautiful NBA-like drop step. She has been consistent game in and game out and has drastically improved her game over the course of the year.

*1st Star
Vivian
Vivian scored the game-winning basket in the 8th grade's nail-biting victory. With less than 10 seconds on the clock and her team down one, she made a pressure packed lay-up giving her team their 4th victory of the season.

STANFORD ADVANCES TO THE FINAL FOUR
The Stanford women will be going to the NCAA Final Four for the second straight year. A huge win tonight over Iowa State, as they await the winner of Arizona State and U-Conn.

Brackets will be updated on Thursday and full results on the blog as well.

A solid start for the baseball team

The baseball team lost their first game 8-2, but it was by far, above and beyond better than the showings last season.

After a shaky first 2 innings, the team shutout their opponent for the next 3 innings and had a lot of good defensive plays.

This definitely had a look of an actual baseball team, something that could not be said very often in our first season last year.

There were a lot of positives that came from this afternoon, and the team should look to build on this for the rest of the season.

6th grade wins big

The 6th grade girls put together a complete game, doing it on the offensive and defensive end. For their effort, they won 24-9, a game they dominated from start to finish.

This win was the definition of a team effort as each of the 5 girls that were there today scored. They were aggressive on defense, getting steals and creating numerous fast break opportunities.

Beverlyn led the scoring with her new career-high of 14 points, including a beautiful NBA style drop step that led to a bucket late in the 4th quarter.

With the victory, their confidence should be at an all-time high. The girls are (3-2) on the season.

7th grade

The 7th grade might've looked past their opponent today. Having beaten them in all of the previous three meetings, this looked like an easy win. But a 4th quarter dominated by the opponent where they outscored the 7th grade 15-3.

The final score was 23-17.

After leading by 6 at the end of three quarters, everything just went south. Their defense completely collapsed and their shots that went in during the 3rd quarter were no longer falling.

With the loss, the girls are back at .500 with a record of (2-2).

The low of lows become the high of highs

This time, the lead was gone.

The 8th grade girls blew a 10 point lead and found themselves down a point, 26-25 with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game.

With about 4 minutes left in the fourth, the girls were up by 10 points, only to see the lead slip away little by little. Then with less than two minutes in the game, the other team hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game.

On the following inbounds, the 8th graders turned the ball over right back to the other team. A girl drove to the basket and was fouled, setting up two free-throws for the opposition with the game tied.

She made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line and the 8th grade trailed by a point.

With 20 seconds left on the clock, Vivian somehow found herself wide open in the front court. The ball got to her and she made the go-ahead lay-up, putting the 8th grade up 27-26 with 6.7 seconds left.

Following a timeout, the other team threw up a 3-pointer that never reached the rim and time expired. The 8th grade escaped with a 27-26 win.

BRIEFLY: With the win, the 8th grade girls are now (4-1). They did a great job from the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-24.

In my 6 years of CYO, these are the worst refs I have ever seen

So I stood there by the free-throw line after calling what seemed like foul #60 of the game. It was a 7th grade girls division 2 game. And usually 7-2 means pretty skilled. And don't get me wrong, the players definitely were, but just way too aggressive.

The score was 21-18. The team at the free-throw line had only 4 players left, as 2 of them had fouled out previously in the quarter. The losing team had a chance to cut the lead to just 1 with less than 2 minutes left in the game.

Then someone, sitting in the front row, yells across the gym to the coach, "Coach, in my 6 years of CYO, these are the worst refs I have ever seen."

I heard it and gave that fan's team an unsportsmanlike technical foul. My partner heard it too and immediately ended the game.

It wasn't even the worst crowd I have ever been part of. In fact, it probably wasn't even close. But the moral of the story is that one idiot fan can ruin the game for everybody.

In the first quarter alone, we called 10 team fouls on one team. These weren't little chippy fouls either. These were blatant shoves, leaning and hovering over another player, holds, etc...If I wanted to let some of it go, I couldn't.

Second quarter, different story. The team learned their lesson and just played defense with their hands straight up. The result, no fouls (maybe just 1) and a clean 2nd quarter.

But the 4th quarter came, and the same things they did in the 1st, they did again in the 4th.

What happens when the crowd gets a technical? The referee (my partner) warns the coach and tells the coach to tell his crowd to keep their cool. That happened in the game. The coach was a class act, complete professional, cool guy who knows that his team was very rough. He didn't complain to me one time the entire game.

About a minute after the warning, my partner T'd up a fan in the crowd. And then a few minutes later, it was my turn to do the same thing that happened just minutes ago. You would think grown adults would learn the lesson and behave.

I've done my share of games where I know I have been shaky, but this definitely was not one of them.

And even if we were terrible, people should know that after the first technical, we were serious. They needed to keep their composure whether we were good or stunk.

Instead, one clown ruined the game for everybody.

And can you believe this moron actually said, "This game is for the kids," as he left the gym.

EXCLUSIVE: The state of Baseball

By now, you should've heard that the baseball team is now (1-0). How? By forfeit.

The other team had only 5 players, while we had our full squad, minus our two girls who were playing their basketball game.

Last night, Japan won the World Baseball Classic over Korea. If you watched the game, it was baseball at its finest. Ichiro stepped up to the plate, and drove in the game-winning runs, giving Japan their second straight WBC Championship. Problem is, I would bet, less than 5 people in the entire school knew it was going on.

Why is baseball not popular?

I think people nowadays no longer grow up with baseball like they did before. It is no longer America's past time. Kids want to be Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. Nobody (other than me) wants to be Derek Jeter or Tim Lincecum.

Basketball and soccer are far more popular among kids in our school and in schools in general, because they are simple games. In basketball, the objective of the game is simple --throwing a ball through a hoop. You can go by yourself to the park to shoot baskets. In soccer, you kick the ball into a goal.

In baseball, you need to be able to pitch, hit, catch, run the bases, etc...There are so many things in baseball that you need to do to be a complete player. And in our society today, we as a whole, are lazy and do not have patience.

A 3rd grader can shoot 10 baskets, and more than likely, at least make one shot. Whereas if he took 10 swings at a baseball, he may not make contact once. And if he does make contact, what are the chances that it would be a base hit?

In baseball, you fail more often than not. In fact, a good baseball player will only succeed 3 out of 10 times when he hits.

You can have one good player on a basketball team, and the team can win. But if you have only one good player on the baseball team, your chances are next to none.

BASEBALL IN OUR SCHOOL
It disappoints and frustrates me that we only have one baseball team this year. We could've easily had 3 teams, but unfortunately settled for just 1. I don't think a lot of the parents or students understand the game of baseball, and therefore are hesitant about trying something new. I've also heard a lot of terrible excuses, but I won't get into those here.

It also doesn't help that baseball is the last sport of the year and a lot of the students have already checked out.

I've also heard about the danger issue. Baseball is no less or more dangerous than any other sport. I think it's a fear of trying something new, that parents and students alike are not willing to try.

After this year, who knows if we will have another baseball team? I would have loved for the 3rd and 4th graders to have a baseball team, but there just wasn't enough support.

It hurts because when the 3rd and 4th graders become 6th, 7th or 8th graders, they will probably want to play. And when they do, they will already be behind everyone else in their development.

BASEBALL IN OTHER SCHOOLS

The baseball problem is not just at our school, it's across the board. When I was in 3rd grade, CYO had baseball. By the time I was in 6th or 7th grade, CYO got rid of baseball because not enough teams wanted to join.

This new league we are in, the SFPSBL is very small. Consider the amount of basketball teams we have and compare it to the amount of baseball teams.

The team we played on Sunday has at least 2 basketball teams in every grade. That's at least 10 boys. But their baseball program, has only one team in the 7th or 8th grade. On Sunday, they could only produce 5 players.

They have at the bare minimum 20 boys in their 7th and 8th grade classes and could produce only one baseball team.

THE FUTURE

Major League Baseball however is not suffering at the box office. They still draw more fans at ballgames year after year. However, the quality of players, year by year, has been going down. Less people are playing baseball, therefore less players to choose from.

The future for baseball does not look bright, but here at St. Mary's, the coaches and myself are doing our best to change that. And the only way it can get brighter is if more kids try playing.

I am extremely proud of the brave boys and girls who are playing baseball this year. They have my respect, because they try and are open to doing something relatively new.

Hopefully next year, we'll have a lot more players on the diamond.

Weekend Wrap-Up

The baseball team is 1-0. They showed up and they won the game. More details on this in tomorrow's post. Practice tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. from Moscone.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

8th grade
The 8th grade salvaged the lone basketball win for the girls this weekend, hanging on to a 32-29 victory to improve their regular season record to (3-1).

The girls led by as much as 11 in the second half, but they have a lot of trouble playing with the same intensity and skill when they have such a huge lead. The other team cut it to 3 points with two seconds left in the game, but the 8th graders hung on for the victory.

Missed lay-ups and free-throws, the two things that have plagued them all year, did again today. They shot 5-of-21 from the line and missed more than 10 lay-ups.

Knowing that they didn't play their best, and they were able to win is always a good sign. They just need to put one complete game together.

6th grade
The 6th grade dropped both games this weekend, yesterday by 2 points and today by just one. Turnovers absolutely led to their fate today. Couple that with missed lay-ups and free-throws, they now find themselves at (2-2).

They were up 3 points in the 4th quarter, but were unable to hold on to the lead. After starting the season with two straight wins, they have now lost two in a row.

The good thing is that both of the games they played were winnable, so if the mistakes can be corrected, the team should be in good shape.

3rd/4th grade
For the second straight game, the 3rd/4th graders jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see it disappear right away. The other team featured a girl who has about a head taller than any of our girls. She clogged up the lane and essentially scored all the other team's points. The final was 16-4.

NDV PRACTICE

7th grade - 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

6th grade dealt their first loss

The 6th grade girls lost their first game of the season 20-18, in a game that they easily could've won.

Marissa fouled out in the middle of the 4th quarter, despite having her best offensive game of the season. So one less ball handler in the lineup made it even more difficult for a 6th grade team that has so much trouble taking care of the ball.

Offensively, they played a solid game, putting up a season-high 18 points, but the two big problems were their inability to box-out and rebound.

Rebounding is so important in the game of basketball, and not many people realize that. When the girls were unable to get rebounds, the other team had constant second chances to score.

They also turned the ball way too much. They got away with it last week when they were able to sneak away with a win, but they weren't able to dodge it today. Tied at 18-18, a turnover led directly to the other team's game winning basket.

The 6th grade will play again tomorrow at 12.

BASEBALL PRACTICE
Baseball remains a go for this afternoon at 4 p.m. from West Sunset. Stay tuned for any changes.

More fans can help you win a game

EXETER, England, March 6 (UPI) -- A study of high level British golfers shows the benefit of "social support" is most significant when a player is under stress, researchers said.

University of Exeter researchers focused on 197 British male amateur golfers, who all played at a high level -- handicaps ranging from plus-2 to 4. The golfers completed a series of questionnaires to measure the level of support they receive from their peers.

They were also questioned about their confidence before a game and about a number of factors that could cause stress or anxiety.

Dr. Tim Rees said the quality of their performance was measured, taking into account their final score, handicap and the conditions on the day.

The study, published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, showed that when the athletes playing under stress, social support could improve their performance by nearly one shot per round of golf.

"Our study reveals the ongoing support of friends and family to be one of the most important factors influencing sports performance," Rees said in a statement. "While training, tactics and luck all play a part, the encouraging words or kind gestures of a partner or friend can make the difference between a footballer scoring that winning goal, or a sprinter achieving a record time."

WARRIORS GAME

5:30 p.m. will be the meet time for the Warriors game tomorrow. If you do not wish to go that early and see them shootaround courtside, then be there for the 7:30 start.

3 stars of the weekend, Happy Birthday!

And now the 3 Stars of the weekend, taken from hockey. That's where the 3 stars come from. This was tough because there were many great performances this weekend.

But before we get to that, everyone here would like to wish MELINDER, real name Melinda a Happy Birthday.

*** 3rd Star - Melinda
Melinda has hit some tough outside shots, including some crucial ones in the win on Sunday. Saturday, she hit 2 of her free-throws in the team's comeback to win.

** 2nd Star - Beverlyn
Beverlyn is one of the most improved girls players this season and it has showed so far in the tournament and games. She can now create her own shot, and doesn't have to just wait for the occasional rebound for her to put back in. When she gets the ball, she is much more aggressive and doesn't hesitate to shoot.

* 1st Star - Vivian
For the second straight week, Vivian gets the #1 star honor. In only two quarters, Vivian piled up 8 points in the 8th grade's victory. Vivian does a lot of the little things right, running the court and getting into position where she can score. She makes the most out of her opportunities and converts them. Soon, these games will be expected from Vivian and not just one of those great games every now and then.

Winning isn't always pretty

It was a struggle this afternoon for both the 6th and 7th grade girls. Both of their games were winnable, but they almost found ways to lost it at the end. However, both teams did enough and prevailed.

The 6th grade barely hung on and won their second game 10-9. They are now (2-0) on the season. The other team missed a lot of easy shots, and so did our girls. A lot of make able lay-ups were not converted on both sides.

The lingering problem is the inability to take care of the ball. They simply turn the ball over too many times in the course of a game--lob passes, dribbling off their own foot or simply fumbling the ball.

They are (2-0) and good teams find ways to win.

7th Grade

The 7th grade built an 11-2 4th quarter lead, only to see the other team score 6 points in the last minute of the game to cut the score to 11-8. They also did just enough at the end and win back-to-back this weekend.

The problems with the 7th grade are similar to the 6th grade. They too have problems taking care of the ball. Like most teams, they seem to only want to go right and find themselves trapped on one side of the court more often than not.

The game could've been a lot more lopsided, but several of the girls missed breakaway lay-ups.

But defensively, they were solid limiting the other team to 2 points until the last minute of the 4th quarter.

With the victory, they are now (2-1) on the season.

SATURDAY RECAPS
8th Grade
The 8th grade girls absolutely locked down their opponent Saturday with their defense. They held the opposition to 2 points until midway through the 4th quarter. They had trouble making their shots, but their defense won them the game. It's a positive sign for the 8th grade, a week after their worst defensive performance of the season.

The final was 24-11. The first half featured a good performance from the free-throw line as the team shot 6-of-11, a drastic improvement from their average during the season.

3rd/4th grade
The 3rd/4th grade were tied with less than a minute left in the game 4-4, but the other team managed to get one in before the end of regulation. Cynthia, once again scored the 4 points. Little by little, the team is improving. They just need to get the basics down and they'll be a lot better.

7th grade
The 7th grade erased a 9-point deficit in the second-half, and came back to win 16-12. They were down 11-2, but they worked their way to the free-throw line, where they won the game. It was one of their best efforts in their two seasons.

Saturday Wrap: 6th grade wins first game, practices tomorrow (Baseball and Basketball)

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
Remember, to move your clocks forward an hour so you won't be late for practice tomorrow. When it hits 2 a.m., it's really 3 a.m.

The 6th grade picked up their first victory of the season, in a 10-5 win. After losing three straight in the tournament, they bounced back strong, played some good defense and scored just enough to pick up win number one.

3rd/4th Grade

The 3rd/4th grade played their first game ever, but lost 14-2. It was a little bit nerve-racking as expected, but with a game under their belts, they should be much better prepared for the rest of the season. Cynthia scored the first ever points for the 3rd/4th grade team.

7th Grade

Playing again with only five players, the 7th grade surrendered an 8-0 run early in the 4th quarter, and were unable to catch up and dropped game one of the season 18-14. It's too difficult to play with only five girls, but they hung in their for the entire game. It was a good effort, but you can only do so much when you are understaffed.

8th Grade
The 8th graders had their 3-game winning streak snapped today in a 35-20 loss. The defense for the 8th grade which had propelled them to victory in the last two games was nonexistent. They gave up 15 points alone in the first quarter, most of them off of turnovers and mistakes.

It also didn't help that they shot 8-for-24 from the free-throw line. They cut the lead to 10 points in the 3rd quarter, but that's as close as they got. They are now (1-1) on the year.

8th grade wins opener, Saturday preview

The 8th grade girls won their first game of the regular season, 37-27, earlier tonight. They got out to an incredible start, scoring 15 points in the first quarter.

Leading by 12 at half-time, they eased up a little bit and the other team came roaring back and cut the deficit to 2 at the end of three.

But a strong 4th quarter, featuring good defense, and clutch shots, propelled the 8th grade to a 10 point victory in the season opener.

They play again tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.

No practice...waiting for schedules

No practice tonight for the 3rd/4th and 6th grade teams. Shocker.

Also, we are still waiting on the schedules. CYO still has yet to release them. There's a sneak peek on a previous post, but an official one should be out some time tonight.

I will have the official first games on the blog and a hard copy will be given out in class tomorrow...I hope.

Can you stand the rain? Schedules update

It looks to be a very wet week here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Practices this week are definitely in jeopardy and the latest information will be found here on the blog.

As for the basketball schedules, they are, at this time, still not public. But here's a sneak peek from the versions I saw. These dates and times are subject to change.

Saturday

Schedules out tomorrow...I have a PREVIEW!!!

So the official schedules are out tomorrow, here are a few things that I have noticed, barring changes in the official schedule.

--Our new home gym will be St. Monica. Each team plays 3-4 games there so get used to the low ceiling and smaller court.

--Almost every game will be on Saturday, so clear that day of the week. There are as of right now only 2 Friday games the entire year, and they are both for the 8th grade.

--Some teams have 1 Sunday game.

That's all I have for now. If hard copies are available, I will pass them out at school tomorrow. If not, then Tuesday.
