In case you missed it the University of California Berkeley announced Tuesday that they will be cutting sports because of...what else? Budget problems.
Among those getting the ax are men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and shockingly, baseball.
As many of you know, sports do not come cheap, there is equipment and at a bigger level, traveling, paying coaches and all these other expenses. In college, teams play games in other cities, so they will need money to get there, whether it's by plane or bus. They also need a place to stay so there is money that is needed for a hotel. All these costs add up and Cal, like many other colleges and companies these days are working on a tight budget, and losing money.
This sucks, because 163 athletes will no longer have a chance to play sports. 13 coaches will no longer have jobs.
Cal has played baseball since 1892 and will not have a program after this year. The most notable former Cal player is former Giants 2B Jeff Kent.
It's a tragedy that sports need to be cut. But in our world today, everything comes down to money.
With the cutting of these four programs, they will save an estimated $4-$5 million.

Giants Magic Number = 3 (UPDATED NUMBER)
What is a magic number? Do the Giants have the magic in them? (That song is terrible by the way...)
So the Giants magic number sits at 4, with the number going down every time the Giants win a game and the Padres lose a game. If they win tonight, it goes down to 3. If the Padres lose, it goes down another. When it hits 0, it's time to celebrate as the Giants will have clinched their first playoff spot since 2003.
Tim Lam, our coach of the last few years, has a friend who does drawings and from time to time, his friend, the Great Nat, will put together something sports oriented. He recently did one of the Giants this year and I thought I'd share it with all of you.

MONDAY NIGHT QUARTERBACK
If you are new to the Monday morning or now night quarterback, it's where we take a look at the weekend that was, the good and the not so good. And this weekend would fall into the not so good category.
5TH/6TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL
We'll start with the game that started the weekend and the 5th/6th grade girls volleyball game, their first of the year. This was a game that they should've and could've won. It's been written already about the numerous match points and their inability to serve the ball over. And let's keep in mind, half of the team is in 5th grade, and in a 5th grade league, they can serve from where they served last year. Unfortunately, we do not have enough players and are forced to be in a 6th grade league.
So there will be balls that just won't go over. People develop at different stages and get stronger at different times. No matter how hard someone tries, it just might not happen. I could lift weights for the rest of my life and I'll never be able to lift something that's 200 pounds. Maybe serving is the case.
However, their coach Heather said practice Sunday was a lot better and every girl was able to serve it over. So it all boils down to consistency.
One thing the girls do need to do better is to be more energetic and talkative on the court. Everyone seems kind of shy and a little hesitant when they are playing. If one person goes balls to the walls and just has tons of energy, maybe it translates to the next person. There's still ways to go and let's hope the girls get things ironed out, starting with their game Friday.
5TH/6TH GRADE SOCCER
Just so this post won't go on forever, we will focus on the 5th/6th grade soccer team today and touch on the 8th graders tomorrow.
Following their best game of the year, albeit they've played only two games, the 5th/6th grade followed that up with a stinker of a practice.
After watching today's 5th/6th grade practice, I was disappointed with what I saw. We've tried several coaches, yelling and screaming, just being nice so they can have fun, and until this point, nothing has seemed to work and it will continue to not work unless the players can find it in themselves to make a change.
I still cannot believe that some of the players are in 5th and 6th grade. We have players who are still pulling and throwing grass, lying down in the middle of practice for no reason and just a simple lack of concentration.
One simple drill took about 15 minutes before it started clicking.
This team has the athletic talent, maybe not the physical strength and size, but they have some decent speed. Some are gifted with strong legs, some with quickness, but it never translates to a game.
Why not? Because they simply do not work hard enough in practice.
I've gotten some heat about trying to keep this soccer team on the field. I hear the criticism, the jokes on the sidelines during games, the negativity and everything else about how the team always loses and it's not fun.
Well sadly, it will continue to be this way until the players change their habits.
I don't blame the coaches, because we've went through five of them and everything remains the same. I hope that at the 5th and 6th grade level they can mature and get it together.
Bottom line is that they have what it takes in them. I still firmly believe they are capable of doing good things on a soccer field. But that effort needs to be there at practice. Games are decided on how you practice, because the way you practice translates to the way you play. If you watch how they practice at times, maybe the results shouldn't be so surprising.
49ERS, RAIDERS AND GIANTS
The 49ers are not a good team. They will not make the playoffs. They were embarrassed again on the road and then Mike Singletary decides to fire Jimmy Raye after defending him not too long ago. The organization is in turmoil and it will not get any better any time soon. They could be 0-5 in a matter of two weeks.
Raiders, how do you miss that field goal? Just brutal and unreal. It only happens to the Raiders.
And one week from today, we should be talking about post-season baseball in the Bay Area for the first time since the A's did it in 2006. The Giants are in the driver's seat right now and they should be able to get into the playoffs, whether it's a division title or a wild-card spot.
And oh yeah, hockey season is right around the corner...Go Sharks...

5th/6th soccer team have a strong bounce back game
On the scoreboard, it will read 5-0, but the players, coaches and those who were in attendance in the 5th/6th grade soccer team's second game of the year know that this afternoon's game was something that hasn't been seen much before.
They dominated the first quarter and had several scoring chances, but they were unable to get the ball into the net. They were hustling to balls, passing it to each other, and pushing the ball up-field, something they are definitely not known for.
After a scoreless first quarter, the other team put two balls past goalie Daniel on two powerful boots from their left-footed striker. There wasn't much anyone could do.
Their best scoring chance came on a 3-on-1 in the first quarter, but being so close to the goal was almost foreign to the forwards, they weren't able to bang the ball past the goalie. The spacing on offense needs some work as some balls trickled through the box with nobody in red on the other side to get a foot on the ball.
This was a great second game, considering how poorly they executed in last week's opener. They had some strong practices this week and it translated to solid play.

Early Saturday Recap: Energy level not there for 8th graders, 5th/6th volleyball takes step forward

After getting trounced in the first set 25-10, they went toe-to-toe in the second set, only to fall behind at the end, losing the second set 25-20.
Their serves were so much better today, as every girl was able to serve the ball over the net -- a huge step forward from last night. The few things they lack right now are the ability to read the ball and communication. This is a quiet bunch and they need to talk it up a lot more if they want to improve.
8th graders take worst loss of the season
The 8th graders came into this season knowing it was going to be a struggle. With some new players on the team and players from years before needing to step up and play a bigger role, a lot of things would have to align in order for them to be a contending team. Couple that with only having 10 players from St. Mary's on the team, their battle was going to be an uphill climb.
One thing that shouldn't have been a question was their effort and that came into question today. After the first quarter, it was already 3-0 and the game was heading toward the oh so familiar ending.
There were players that were physically on the field, but mentally checked out. It's a disservice to the ones who do try, but when not everybody is giving it their 100%, it makes it that much harder to win.
Too many players are lackadaisical to begin the game and the energy level just isn't there. There are always those who are two steps slow to the ball and three games in, look the same as they did when they first started to play. After making a huge step forward last week, they took about five steps back today with their performance.
The battles within the game are never won. When balls are booted in the St. Mary's direction, they are unable to take that ball and push it up the field. Too many times they end up sending the ball the exact same direction it came from. The offensive in its limited chances still struggle to cash in on their handful of opportunities.
Until they're able to identify individually what they need to be better at, it will be the same old swan song.

5th/6th graders go to the limit, 8th graders lose first game

With the ball in their hands, the 5th/6th graders served for match point in the second and third set a combined six to ten times. However, each time, they were unable to serve the ball over.
Those faults overshadowed a terrific debut, where they should've been able to start their season (1-0). In the first set, Edwena served the girls to a first set win 25-22. They dropped the second set 28-26 and the final set 17-15. The final two sets went to tie-breakers.
They have a quick turn around as tomorrow morning they will need to play their second game of the year. Their serve receive was actually better than their serve, an anomaly in volleyball. As long as they start getting their serves over, this team will definitely be competitive.

5th/6th grade volleyball preview
It was one of the best moments of the 2009-10 when the then 4th/5th grade girls won for the first time in their penultimate game of the season. In only year one, they were able to pick up a straight set win. It almost seemed like it was never meant to be as a week before that game, they hit 24 points, with a chance to win a set. They coughed up that lead and ended up losing the game.
Now in year number two, they will look to take their game to another level and compete for the playoffs. It won't be easy as they will now need to step back and serve from the back line, instead of the serving line that was used last year.
The biggest question will be can they serve consistently. Four of the seven girls on the team are in fifth grade, so getting the ball over on serves on a regular basis could be their Achilles heel.
This year, they also welcome a new player, Michelle, who will be playing in her first CYO Game in any sport tomorrow night. In less than two weeks, Michelle has had to learn to adapt to the sporting environment and has already shown improvement.
Two of the stronger girls on the team are Isabella and Edwena, who should have no problem serving the ball over. How they react to balls coming at them however will be a different story.
They also have a new coach, Heather Chen, who will be doing double duty this year. Heather supplants last year's coach Lin Pei Chin who was shipped to Los Angeles for school.
With most teams having already played their first game, the girls will make their sophomore season debut tomorrow night. They've been practicing hard for more than two weeks and they have been anxious for their chance to show everyone what their made of.

Oh, 49ers football
So if you missed the 49ers game last night, you misted one of the best games in the last few years. Although the 49ers didn't win, it was entertaining to say the least.
I won't get all football on you all because most of you don't understand football, but you can't turn the ball over 5 times and win the game. They pretty much beat themselves, which could be a good sign or a bad sign.
In the end, I think this team will right the ship and break their streak of not making the playoffs despite being (0-2). They will need to get started this Sunday on the road in what is as close to a must win game as there is.

I work with Dennis, the CBS-5 anchor that has given shout-outs to our St. Mary's teams. Last week, he did an interview with 49ers coach Mike Singletary that has made the waves through the Internet. So if you missed it, here it is -- definitely worth your time. It gets confrontational...you tell me...who was in the wrong?

Girls Volleyball
Great win for the 8th grade girls, definitely up there among the best victories in the modern day era. This was basically the first game for five of the girls, with Serina not playing in a year and then Marissa who is playing for her third year. Though Marissa led the way, everyone had to chip in for this to happen. Marissa didn't serve every ball, she didn't return every ball. Way to start off the season and hopefully this win will give the girls confidence the rest of the way.
Soccer
A good game despite the loss for the 8th grade soccer team and a not so good game for the younger ones. For the older kids, they were able to score two goals, always a good sign. The goals came courtesy of two players from our neighboring school De Marillac Acamdey, Pablo and Miguel.

The defense was very thin Saturday and that resulted in seven goals, not a good sign. Granted they were playing without Miles for the first half when they gave up the first six, and also hobbling Marissa. They were also missing Gavin C.
On the bright side, Hartman, in only his second game played incredible and Gavin L. also had a really strong showing in the second half after a rough first.
For the youngsters, they were outmatched. They simply weren't as big and strong or powerful as the other team. What they can improve upon are their practice habits. At practice, they tend to fool around and not focus 100% and come game time, it's too late to get rid of the bad habits.

8th grade soccer scores first goals, defense shaky
The good news is that the 8th grade soccer team got on the scoreboard with two goals in their second game of the year. The bad news is that they gave up seven.
In a definite step forward, the 8th grade lost their second game of the year 7-2. The game was a lot closer than the margin of victory, as evident by the back and forth pace of the game. The 8th graders had many scoring opportunities and capitalized on two of them. What hurt them today was their sloppy work in the defensive end in the first half which put them in a 6-0 hole.
They then scored two unanswered goals, one right before halftime and another early in the fourth. Their defense was hamstrung by the fact that Miles could only play in the second half because of a uniform malfunction. Marissa also played, but she was bothered by her knee and was not at 100%. With Miles anchoring the defense in the second half, they allowed only one goal the final two quarters.
Two players who stood out today were Gavin L. and Hartman. Gavin had a very rough first half as he was burned more than once. But he had a very strong second half and probably had his best performance in his career.
Hartman was all over the field and seems to have found himself a spot in the midfield, where he was able to accurately pass the ball up to the forwards for an offensive rush. In only his second game, Hartman has made a huge jump in his level of play.
Despite a loss, the team should have some momentum with them as they were able to score a few goals, knowing that if their defense held up a little better today, the game could've been different.

First game, first win for 8th grade girls

After dropping the first set 25-18 in their volleyball debut tonight at Cornerstone, the seven girls pulled together and grinded out a tough second set 25-22 victory and then capped off their first week of volleyball with a dominating 15-6 third set performance, which gave the girls their first win in their first game ever.
Marissa led the way as she was completely dominant with her overhand serve from start to finish. The 2009 volleyball player of the year showed why she won that award as she rolled off serve after serve after serve.
The lead went back and forth in the second until Marissa stepped up to serve midway through the set. She unleashed a fury of serves and soon the girls stretched the lead out to 23-18. The other team made a fault on their serve to give the girls the second set victory.
As impressive as Marissa was in sets one and two, it was set three that everyone will remember. After collecting a side-out for a quick 1-0 lead in the final set, another eight straight balls gave the 8th graders points, all starting from a Marissa serve.
On match point, Kristine served a nice low liner that just sailed above the net and the other team made one last desperate attempt to return the ball, only to see the ball get swallowed up in their own net.
It was over. First game ever, first win ever.
Not to be overlooked were Marissa's teammates who all played huge roles in the win. After some shaky serving in the first set, the rest of the team picked it up in sets two and three and those were very crucial points that they needed.
Serina, who took a one-year hiatus looked really good returning balls and even had her first ace of the match in set two.
Catharine, Precious, Alexa, Kristine and Gavrielle all played in their first volleyball games ever and all contributed to win number one.
It's hard to fathom that these girls have known each other for less than a week and are already getting along in mid-season's form. The girls talk it up, are encouraging and all have positive attitudes on the court.
And this was only their first game.

The team is now in its third year and has tasted minimal success at best the last two years. In their rookie season, they unofficially won their last game of the year 1-0, although the referee never saw the ball go in the net.
The momentum immediately stalled their second season, because they were unable to have a full squad for almost every single game. When 11 players were needed on the field, they would usually have 9 or 10. The few times they had 11 weren't even their regular players. So the revolving door of players definitely hurt the chemistry of the team and it showed on the field.
However, everyone's hoping that this is the year where they can break through. They've already practiced for close to three weeks and already look sharper than before. In their scrimmage Monday against a 5th grade team that won the championship last year, they were pretty solid throughout and had numerous chances to score goals.
Their best shot came in the first half of the tune-up when Aaron shot the ball hard, only to be stopped by their goalie.
Athletically, the players are gifted. Though they don't have the size, they have the speed and athleticism to compete. They face an uphill battle as most St. Mary's teams do, having half the team being 5th graders playing in a 6th grade league.
What has plagued them over the years was their maturity level at practice. They would goof around too much, argue about who is first in line during drills and other childish nonsense. They still have that problem here and there, but have cut down on those indiscretions.

Daniel is expected to start in goal for the third straight year. The twins Joe and Tom, along with Jason in 5th grade will be making their soccer debuts.
It's time to bend it like Beckham.

8th grade volleyball girls make their debut tomorrow night
Tomorrow night marks the start of the girls athletic season when the class of 2011 takes the court for their first volleyball game ever.
This marks the first time the 8th grade girls have had a volleyball team in their grade level -- the two previous years they were forced to combine with the graduates of 2010.
Marissa is the only holdover from last year's team, with Serina taking a year off before coming back this season. Catharine is playing for the first time. The team is filled out with four girls from our neighboring school.
After three practices this week, the seven girls had to take a crash course in volleyball 101 and will have to be ready come 7 p.m. tomorrow night at Cornerstone. This team has the potential to do some good things, but how quickly can it all come together is the biggest question.
Their keys to success are very similar to years before. Right now, they just need to convert on the majority of their serves and be able to return balls. Right now, they don't have to get too fancy with the spiking or tipping, although it definitely wouldn't hurt.
If you looked at last year's 8th grade team, they were really good with the basics the first part of the year and then they were able to take their game to another level when they needed it most in the playoffs.
What bodes well for this team is their instant chemistry, so it seems. The girls have known each other for less than a week and are already starting to come together as a team. They talk it up on the court, slap high fives and shout encouragements to each other. If they can play as well as they get along, there will be plenty of hand slapping to go around this season.

Their keys to success are very similar to years before. Right now, they just need to convert on the majority of their serves and be able to return balls. Right now, they don't have to get too fancy with the spiking or tipping, although it definitely wouldn't hurt.
If you looked at last year's 8th grade team, they were really good with the basics the first part of the year and then they were able to take their game to another level when they needed it most in the playoffs.
What bodes well for this team is their instant chemistry, so it seems. The girls have known each other for less than a week and are already starting to come together as a team. They talk it up on the court, slap high fives and shout encouragements to each other. If they can play as well as they get along, there will be plenty of hand slapping to go around this season.

Monday morning, now afternoon quarterback
Monday morning quarterback
Not too bad of an effort, not bad at all. You could see the effort from everyone on the field, but the timing, the chemistry and fundamentals just aren't there yet.
SOCCER
Calson, Hartman and Miles, all new to the team, look to have a lot of potential in their soccer skills, but all of their talents right now are incredibly green and raw. It's going to take some time before they get used to the timing of the game.
All in all, they just need to all start playing together as a team, as trite as it sounds. During practice, they need to develop that chemistry. With the now 9th graders gone, people on the team from previous seasons need to step up their game.
The 49ers and Raiders
For the Raiders, not too surprised. Some people may think this team could make some noise, but reality sank in yesterday. Their offensive line is terrible and Jason Campbell will probably get knocked out of a game by the end of the month if things stay the same. But again, they are the Raiders, so what do you expect?
Today is a day to be embarrassed to be a 49ers fan. Almost everybody picked the 49ers to win the division, some even to make the Super Bowl. So any time you lose to a team like the Seattle Seahawks, it's all bad. They didn't just lose -- they were pummeled by 25 points.
Time to get into your little hole and hide. A week from today, they will host the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints, and then they go on the road to Atlanta. They could be staring at an (0-3) start.
I don't think it's looking too good for the red and gold.

The lone bright spot for the Bay Area right now are the Giants, who are tied for first in the National League West. They have the most home games left out of the teams they are competing with so the road to the division title is in their hands. They have the inner lane and if they continue to play like they have on this road trip, we'll be doing some celebrating later this month.

8th grade soccer team goes down in opener
For a team that hasn't had their full squad in practice, the 8th grade soccer team put up a valiant effort in their season opener, falling 4-0.
It was also painfully obvious the team hadn't had a full squad practice.
The spacing, timing and chemistry were all lacking in game one. The offense could never generate anything and the balls at midfield were never controlled. Ball possession is very important in the game of soccer, and the 8th graders were chasing the ball the majority of the game.
There were several times over the course of the game the ball was in their control, but they couldn't sustain any of the momentum for a long stretch of the game.
Mark made the start in goal and played strong after looking a little uncomfortable to start the game. He was in good position to make a lot of saves and was more aggressive as the game continued.
Miles, Hartman and Calson all played in their first soccer games and with some game experience they should be able to contribute more as the season progresses.
They gave up goals in the first and second quarters, and two in the third quarter.
It could've been a lot worse if it wasn't for the goal posts, which the other team hit at least three times in the game.

Kickoff set for tomorrow morning
Tomorrow morning, the 2010-2011 athletics season officially begins when the 8th grade (plus Hartman) plays their first soccer game of the year.This marks the third year of soccer at St. Mary's.
Although most of the players on the team have played before, this is a new team. For the last two years, the current 8th graders played up with the graduating class of 2010. Many of the players will now have bigger roles on the team and will need to step up their game to fill the voids left by our graduates.
That starts at goalie where Mark will get the start in game one, supplanting Elliot, who was the goalkeeper for most of 2009.
Justin and Jeremy will be looked upon to be more of a force on offense and will need to be the aggressors on the offensive end.
Defensively, Gavin C. looks quicker after a year of soccer under his belt and looks to have a strong sophomore campaign.
New to the team are Miles, Calson and Hartman, the lone 7th grader.
Marissa, Timothy and Gavin L. round out the defense.
For soccer, the expectations aren't set as high as other sports, but after a strong practice today, they should have some momentum going into opening day.

Soccer Schedules Released
As always, these schedules are subject to change. The 8th grade team will kickoff the season with a game this Saturday morning, while the 5th/6th grade will have a much needed extra week or preparation with their first game coming next Saturday.

Mr. B wins again
More filler...
"We got off to a very slow start and dropped the first set in a flash," Mr. B said. "We couldn't get used to the fast paced courts and couldn't make our returns. We fought back hard in the second and made it count."
After picking it up in set two, they went on to win the third set 6-3 to advance to the finals.
In the championship, Mr. B and partner trailed 5-3 but came back again after a slow start, and ended up taking the first set in a tie-breaker.
On match point, Mr. B smoked a backhander that their opponents couldn't handle, giving his team the first place trophy.
"We threw our hats in the air...and gave each other a huge celebratory jumping chest bump," Mr. B said. "What made it all the better was that my opponent today is the husband of a former mentor kindergarten teacher at West Portal."
Following the match, a former champion of the tournament years ago came up to Mr. B to congratulate him on the victory.
"Those sure are beautiful trophies you have there, and marble and glass too," the creeper said.

Darian Hagan, a cornerback from the Cal (U.C. Berkley) football team is ready to go for the 2010 season. 2009 was forgettable because his then 1-year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. Here's the story.

The Sharks have a new goalie and a sneak peek at the Athletic Director's meeting
And that's just how the world of professional sports goes, because Niemi is now a San Jose Shark.
San Jose signed him officially today to a one-year contract.So the arch enemy for four games in May could be the goalie that will possibly lead team teal to a Stanley Cup.
Niemi's former team, the Blackhawks weren't willing to pay the Stanley Cup Champion goalie the money that he thought he deserved so Niemi thought he would take his services elsewhere and he soon found his next home in the Bay Area.
"I thought for me it would be really important to go to a really good team and also a really good organization," he said. "They really wanted me there too. It wasn't too hard a decision after all."
AD Meeting
Last night was the yearly CYO Athletic Directors meeting, and every year I go, it reminds me how weird athletic directors are. As a whole, everyone just seems grumpy and angry at CYO. Every time something came up, more than half of the people had looks on their faces like, "What is going on?"
In this little over an hour session, we basically go over rule changes, procedures and all that other good stuff.
Maybe one day you will get to experience this...
Briefly: Happy 90210 day...Does anybody watch the new 90210? The 49ers and Raiders both play their final exhibition games of the season tonight at 7 p.m...The Giants have the day off and will resume their quest for their first playoff berth since 2003 tomorrow night in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.

Filler
In broadcasting, we use the term filler to describe a segment of a broadcast where we have nothing to put, so we just have to put something.
This post right here is filler.
If you recall my epic lacrosse fail from a few months ago, the reason I was even fiddling around with it was we had to do a story on the Santa Clara lacrosse team. This is a club team that was number one ranked in the country at the time. A very brief, but good story that I put together. Take a look. And then below that is the epic lacrosse fail in case you have never seen that.
