Upset bid falls short for the 5th/6th graders

The 5th/6th grade was clinging to a 5-4 lead heading into the most important six minutes of the season.

But then it all fell apart.

OLPH went on a 10-0 run to start the 4th quarter and a late comeback proved too little too late as the 5th/6th graders were eliminated from the playoffs in a 17-13 loss.

This was a huge turn of events from a 15 point defeat last week in the regular season finale.

Their defense was a lot stronger, and it also helped OLPH was not hitting their shots.

The 5th/6th graders did all they could to weather the storm, but in the end, the team with more experience and talent prevailed.

OLPH was aided by several turnovers in the 4th quarter when the 5th/6th graders blatantly gave the ball away, leading to many uncontested layups which really widened the gap.

An Eric Lei jump shot midway through the third put the 5th/6th grade ahead, and for a while, it looked like maybe they would be able to hang onto the lead.

But their offense waited until the last few minutes of the game to wake up, and by then, the lead was already close to double figures and there was not enough time to come back.

Eric L. did add a jumper that cut the lead to 16-13, but OLPH sank a free throw to ice the game with less than 20 seconds in the game.

Every player on the team showed growth throughout the season, and every single player made a shot, which is a big stepping stone for a young team like this.

All in all, it was a very respectable and solid effort by this team of rookies, getting to the brink of a championship game in their first year.
