In our trip around the school to take a look at the first half of the basketball season, we examine the first four games of the 3rd grade.
As expected, there are growing pains for players that have never played before. Getting on to the court, with uniforms, a scoreboard, a referee, is something that can't be duplicated in the school yard, practice or Chinese Rec. Center. It's an entirely different feel and at times, it can be overwhelming.
I'm sure everybody has been nervous at one point or another, and that has led to some mistakes. We can all live with that as mistakes do happen, during every single game.
What this team needs more than anything else is experience. The more you play, the better you get. The more you are aware of the surroundings. Little stuff like lining up correctly on the free throws, or getting in front of someone for a rebound. Those are the types of things that are missing right now.
At the 3rd grade level, and actually, at any level really, is to make lay-ups. This team gets to the basket more often than not. They have plenty of chances to make shots, but for whatever rhyme or reason, the shots don't seem to fall. When they do, you'll sit back and won't even notice this is a 3rd grade team.
