The 7th/8th grade snapped a five game losing streak and won their final game of the year 34-20.
Matthew and Edzon both had huge 1st quarters and combined to give the boys a 14-4 lead after one. Their coach Tommy said it was the best quarter of basketball the team played the entire year.
However, the scoring slowed down and the other team hit two lucky three balls before halftime to make it a 16-10 lead at halftime.
Then with some poor defense and an offensive drought, the other team tied the game up at 16-16 late in the third. Matthew then hit a lay-up as part of his season high 14 points to give the 8th grade back their lead.
They then closed the game out from there on a 16-4 run and won their final game of the regular season.
Edzon had a season high 10 points and Jia Jun chipped in with three really nice jump shots for 6 points of his own. Benjiman and Jackie both added a bucket each.
So the 7th/8th grade (3-5) becomes the second St. Mary's team to see their season come to an end. The three DeMarillac 8th graders, a year removed from winning a championship, along with coaches Derek and Tommy fell short of the post-season.
The competition this year was a lot better and with new players on the team, chemistry never got to the point where it needed to be.
They started the season with two wins and it looked like it was going to be smooth sailing. But the losses began to mount and the team never recovered until Friday night's finale.
It was a good game, good effort, but with so many new players, it was hard to find a groove.

3rd/4th grade suffers tough loss to end the season
The 3rd/4th graders had several chances to tie the game in the final seconds Monday night, but weren't able to, as they lost their final game of the regular season 20-18.
Nabiyou scored 14 points and is the front runner for Rookie of the Year, while Kenneth chipped in with 4 points.
They wrap up their inaugural season with a record of (2-6).

Nabiyou scored the only bucket for the boys. They play their final regular season game Monday night.

5th grade drops second game of the year

In what was a very lackluster performance, the 5th grade boys lost for the second time in three games, 16-13 Saturday afternoon.
From the start, you could tell this was not the same team that had won five games and is bound for a playoff appearance.
Their offense was in shambles and their defense lazy as many of the players did not seem emphatic about playing. It was as if they didn't want to play until the 4th quarter. They let the little things get to them and weren’t paying attention on the court or in the huddles.
They actually led 4-2 after the 1st quarter, but from that point on, the game went downhill, scoring just one point the entire 2nd quarter and trailed 6-5 at halftime.
Then came a disastrous 3rd quarter, which put them behind five points to start the fourth. With some urgency, they stepped up their game in the fourth quarter. The 5th graders began their full-court press and played very aggressive defense.
You could see that they began to want to win and played with passion, something that was missing the first three quarters.
The 5th graders forced the other team to turn over the ball, leading to points for the 5thgraders, including two nice jump shots by Brendan, who had the game high of 7 points. They only allowed the other team 2 points in the fourth quarter. But, they started playing real basketball too late and ultimately lost by three.
One thing they didn't show Saturday was teamwork or good team chemistry. There was a lot of finger-pointing and a lack of collective effort. A lot of it was just 1-on-1 play. Many of the strengths and good points of this team did not show in this game.
Sloppy ball movement, irrational decision making, passive defense and running into traffic ultimately doomed this team.
This team has the potential to make a deep run in this season, but with games like this, we can see there is still a lot of work to be done

With only five teams in the division, three wins was enough to seal a berth in the post-season.

After starting the season with two straight wins, the 7th/8th graders have lost four straight, the latest a 28-16 setback Sunday night.
It's been a rough going for the boys as they have struggled to find any type of rhythm in their games. Even with a few returning players, the team looks lost on the court and continue to lack game awareness.
New players are prone to make mistakes, but it's game six, and not game one, yet a lot of the simple mistakes are still being made.
They are now (2-4) on the season and will need to win out, plus get some help, if they want to reach the post-season.

Controversy surrounds end of 6th grade game
The 6th grade boys appeared to have a 15-14 lead with under 20 seconds to go in the game.
But the referees, who did not know Amarit fouled out, realized it after the 6th graders went ahead. So not only did the referees take a point away from the 6th grade, they then ruled a technical foul against St. Mary's for not picking up on the foul.
So the other team ended up hitting three free throws down the stretch, and the 6th grade lost 17-14.
It's unknown at this time what will result from these chain of events.

The 7th grade got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon, beating their opponent 32-22 in a playoff rematch. Strangely it was their lowest scoring offensive output for the season.
Even though it was a 10 point win, the game felt a lot more lopsided. The 7th grade never panicked and you always had the feeling they were going to win this game. Their lead never reached below seven for most of the second half.
Jonathan hit two 3 pointers and had a game high 13 points while Michael poured in 7 points.
They are now (4-2).

The 5th grade won 12-9 Saturday morning to improve to (5-1) on the season and returning to the playoffs after missing out on the post-season last year.

6th grade inches closer to .500
The 6th graders pitched a shutout in the second half of their game Friday night and won 14-4, as they moved a game closer to .500. They have a chance to even their record at three wins and three losses Saturday afternoon.
Amarit scored a game and career high 6 points to lead the way, while Bill chipped in with 4 points. Ethan added 2 points.
In a reverse from their previous game, it was the other team that shot the ball in their own basket, giving the 6th grade points 13 and 14. A week ago, it was one of the St. Mary's players who shot it in their own basket.

8th grade plays better, but suffers another defeat
The 8th graders played arguably their best game of the year but still came out on the short end, losing 41-27, dropping their record to (3-3) on the season.
Because of an ineligible player on St. John, the 8th grade gained a game in the standings and actually had a winning record coming into this game.
Their opponent tonight was strong and hit several 3 pointers in the 1st half which stretched the lead out to double digits at one point. For about three to four minutes in the third, the 8th grade trailed 30-16 as neither team was able to score.
That was when the 8th graders needed to make their run, but their offense stalled.
It was a bright spot to see the team score close to 27 points, the combined score of their last two offensive outputs.
But their defense down low was not good as the other team got the ball too easy in the post and just simply took shots from close range and hit them. The St. Mary's boys did not.
They did have a lot of good looks by the basket, but they just couldn't finish.

3rd/4th grade has winning streak snapped
The 3rd/4th grade boys lost Monday night 17-6, ending their two game winning streak and dropping them to (2-3) on the season.

Their opponent was the number one team in the division, so there was a little bit of an intimidation factor going into the game. But they need to find a way to score some points. Scoring in the teens, let alone the low teens, is not going to get the job done.

7th/8th grade now drops below .500
Rough night in Pacifica for the St. Mary's teams. The 7th/8th graders lost on the same floor the 7th graders lost on a few hours prior, a 28-17 setback which puts them below .500 for the season.
The other team was ready for the championship rematch from a year ago. The 7th/8th graders weren't ready and could not take care of the ball, leading to a lot of easy buckets by the other team.
They forfeited their last game and at (2-3), that forfeit may prove costly when it comes playoff time. It could be the reason they are sitting at home come February.

5th Grade squeaks by, goes to (4-0)

It was a tight game throughout which featured the good -- strong defense, hitting clutch shots and good passing. But also displayed the bad -- missed free throws, turnovers and frustration.
In the end, the 5th graders found a way to get it done and came out on top.
They won't get too much time to enjoy their win as their next game comes this Sunday afternoon, where they'll try to remain the only undefeated team left in the school.

What they must ponder is why they weren't ready to play to start either half.
For the second straight week, they came out flat and were trailing 9-4 minutes into the game. Leslie was forced to burn another early timeout to jump start the team. It did help briefly as they trimmed the lead to one midway through the 2nd quarter. But a few late buckets by the other team made it a 19-13 game at halftime.
Any thoughts of a second half comeback was erased minutes into the 3rd quarter when the other team went on a 7-0 run. They pushed their lead to as much as 16 and the 7th grade boys could never recover.
Jonathan had a rough first half, but pulled it together from long range in the second half, hitting four 3 pointers. But even that wasn't enough for the 7th grade.
Defensively, they were shredded, giving up easy passes to the basket, and another handful off of out of bounds plays. Too many times, they look like bad NFL cornerbacks who don't have vision on the ball. They stick to their man, but have no clue when the ball is coming. At least three times, the other team caught the ball by the basket, because a St. Mary's had his back to the ball.
Much like their handful of losses in the last few years, it was their defense that bit them. Giving up close to 50 points will rarely get the job done.
If they were hoping to outscore the other team, that wasn't going to happen because there aren't enough players on the team who can put up consistent points besides Jason Lei, Jonathan and Michael.

They were able to cut the lead to seven midway through the 4th quarter, but nobody boxed out off a free throw. Instead of having the chance to make it a five point game, maybe even four, the other team scored and just like that, it was a nine point game.

The 3rd/4th grade boys are sitting at .500 after a second straight win, their second in four days.
After losing the first two games of the season, the youngest team in the school has rolled two straight, their latest a Wednesday night 15-12 heart stopper.
It was a tight game through but Nabiyou continued his hot streak and scored 12 points while Kenneth added in 3 points.
They're (2-2) on the season.
After losing the first two games of the season, the youngest team in the school has rolled two straight, their latest a Wednesday night 15-12 heart stopper.
It was a tight game through but Nabiyou continued his hot streak and scored 12 points while Kenneth added in 3 points.
They're (2-2) on the season.

Nabiyou scores 15 points in 3rd/4th's first win
The 3rd/4th grade boys got their first win of the season and in their careers in style Sunday afternoon witha 17-0 shutout victory.
Nabiyou was on fire and scored a career high 15 points to lead the way. He was hitting some outside shots and was really explosive taking it to the basket.
Kenneth added the other two points for the boys.
They are now (1-2) on the season and play their next game Wednesday night.

8th grade drops to .500 in another sloppy effort
The first game of 2014 was not kind to the 8th grade boys as they dropped to .500 on the year in a deflating 21-14 loss.
In their previous game, they made so many mistakes all over the court, but because of a weaker opponent, they got away with it. Not the case Saturday afternoon.
Raymond, who sat out the entire 3rd quarter, was not 100% scored only two points. And as he goes, the rest of the team goes as well.
It could easily be attributed to rust but the other team also had a few weeks off as well. Their opponent also played with only five players, and allegedly their best players weren't even present at the game. And yet still the class of 2014 only mustered 14 points the entire game.
Plain and simple, you cannot win games in division five on a consistent basis by scoring in the teens, especially not when you're in the 8th grade.
Jason Ng who made his return after a one game absence, scored 6 points, but was 2-for-6 from the free throw line. He also hasn't made a 3 pointer since last year.
The rest of the team also struggled and missed numerous lay-ups. Their rebounding wasn't too much better.

7th grade shakes off slow start and wins third straight
Six out of the seven 7th graders scored Saturday afternoon, and the boys shook off a slow start to win their third game of the season 45-24.
One of those players who found the basket was Spencer, who hit his first two shots of the season in the 3rd quarter. He created his first shot off the dribble and banked in a shot and then hit a lay-up off of a nice pass a few minutes later in the quarter.
There was some rusty early on as the 7th grade (3-1) faced their largest deficit of the season, down 10-3 a little more than halfway through the 1st quarter.
Leslie called a timeout to chew out the team and they woke up from there. From that point forward, they went on a 22-2 run to end the first half and took a 25-12 into the break.
Michael had his best game of the season, hitting two 3 pointers and lead the fast break, setting up his teammates nicely by the basket.
The team as a whole was really good in transition, with several great passes, like they were running a 3-on-2 or 2-on-1 practice drill. Unfortunately, the game ball wasn't the best and several usual gimme lay-ups rimmed out of the cylinder.
Jason Hou returned to the lineup after a two game absence and scored two points on free throws at the end of the first half. Even though he only scored two, he contributed in ways that do not appear on the stat sheet.
He has pretty good basketball IQ and made a great steal in the 2nd quarter. He read the play and got the ball, then wrapped a pass around to Jason Lei who scored two of his 11 points on an easy shot by the basket.
Jonathan did not have the hot hand like he did before the break, but still managed to tie Michael for a team high of 12 points. Allen added two points.
Defensively, they were pretty solid and forced the other team into a lot of bad shots. Part of their comeback was due to their press, which suffocated their opponent.
And the defense led to offense, which led to a third straight win.
