The 4th/5th graders lost in three sets Monday night in the final game of the CYO Preseason Tournament.
They did an incredible job in the second set and dominated, winning 25-16. However, the other team had several girls who ran off a slew of serves in the final set, handing them a 15-9 defeat in the last set.
This was the last game the 4th and 5th graders will play together because they are going their separate ways once the regular season starts.
Sara and Avalon will now be the elders of the 3rd/4th grade team, while the 5th graders, who will be playing in a 6th grade division, will have more experience than the four girls who are playing for the first time in 6th grade.
Both teams were pretty even for the most part, but the advantage on big servers went to the other team. Tied at 13-13, the other team rolled five straight points off serves, which put the girls behind in the first set. They eventually fell 25-19.
Justina served five straight over for points in the second set, which paced the 4th/5th graders to the second set victory.
But with the ability to tweak the lineups in the third set, the other team stacked their big servers together and it proved too much for the 4th/5th graders.
Nonetheless in year two, every girl on the team is more than capable of serving the ball over consistently. However, it's going to be a little tougher now for the 5th graders because they will be serving from the back line in a 6th grade division.
