8th grade prevails over class of 2010

After splitting the first two sets, the 8th grade took control of the third and deciding set when Marissa served the class of 2011 out to a 7-0 lead. The alumni, made up of Emily, Melinda, Tiffany Ye, Sally, Patricia and assistant coach Vanessa, who was an honorary St. Mary's alum for the night, made a valiant comeback but their early deficit proved too much to overcome. The 8th graders won the final set 25-15 and also won the match. They won a close first set 26-24 and lost the second 23-25.

It was a great night of volleyball that would've made anybody who has been in the volleyball program within the last three years very proud. The graduates didn't look rusty at all and they were playing as if they had been playing all year. The problem was that the current 8th grade has been playing all year. There were numerous volleys that went back and forth and the three set match lasted for nearly 90 minutes.

With the score 25-24 in favor of the 8th grade, Catharine made a beautiful tip at the net to seal the victory in the first set. Sally served one that zipped right over the net on set point to give the class of 2010 set number two.

Both teams played with everything they had despite this being an exhibition match. Girls were diving for balls and many of them were visibly upset when they made mistakes. The intensity and passion for the game made for a very well played game.

Thank you to everybody who took the time to come out tonight, especially the graduates who even practiced yesterday for tonight's contest.

Look for highlights in the next day or so.
