White Team slumps on offense, take second place

In a CYO division, whether high or low, one team wins the championship. It's a rule and somebody takes home a trophy at the end of the game.

Unfortunately tonight, the White Team took home the second place trophy.

With Mark looking like he was going to pass out minutes into the game, and missed lay-ups underneath the basket, the White Team made their quest for a championship that much more difficult in a ugly looking 19-11 loss.

By no means was this a great game, not anywhere close to a classic. If it wasn't for a Gavin Lin last second putback that wasn't defended by the other team, there would've been no scoring in the entire fourth quarter.

And this was a championship game?

As bad as the play was on both ends, the game was still there for the taking, even with Mark ailing.

The White Team had plenty of clean looks in the first half, and just weren't able to hit them. The other team made two 3 pointers in the first half, that basically won them the game.

In this division, the championship team scored 5 points in the second half of a championship game.

Mark got the White Team going early on with a beautiful drive to the basket, a sign of what many thought were good things to come. He even had a brilliant move mid-second where he went coast to coast that cut the lead to 9-7.

But everything that the White Team knew they needed to do in order to win the game, they did not do, and it bit them in the end.

Gavin Chan, Gavin Lin and Calson combined for 6 points.

Mark had a team high 5 points,  but was held scoreless in the second half.

Despite the loss, the core of this team has come a long way in the last few years, forced to play with the now 7th graders for two years, and the last two on their own as the White Team.

They crafted out their own identity and were a good team in their last season at St. Mary's.

Granted, they were in a weak division, but the way they won their games were not a fluke. When they clicked, they were an exciting and fun team to watch, and making it to the final game of the season is always an accomplishment they can look back on for years to come.
