7th/8th grade stunned in loss to open season

Put the champagne away and a hold on the rings, because a volleyball championship for the 7th/8th grade just got a whole lot tougher.

Placed in a lower division, which was thought to be too low for this team, the 7th/8th grade girls were stunned and lost their first regular season game in straight sets, 25-18, 26-24.

Their opponent was strong, serving up some real tough balls for the girls all match long. It took the girls a whole set to get accustomed to it, and by the time that happened, it was too late.

They actually took a brief lead late in the second set, but could not hang on and fell in the tiebreakers.

Against a real formidable team, the little mistakes were magnified like the lack of communication and overall sloppiness.

This is the first year where a St. Mary's volleyball team isn't playing in the lowest division and it showed.

Yes, the girls have gotten so much better, but this was a reality check that success at a different level is not going to come easy.

After winning the CYO preseason tournament which saw them sweep three games, this game on paper looked like it was going to be cake.

But instead it was a rude awakening.
