5th/6th grade girls win season opener

The 5th grade girls have the daunting task of not only playing up a grade in a 6th grade division, but also serving from the actual serving line.

Friday night at Mission Dolores, the four 5th graders looked unphased as each of them stepped up to the line and delivered solid serve after serve in a 25-16, 25-17 victory to start the year.

It's strange how the sporting world works, as the 5th graders lost all three games of their tournament against 5th grade teams, but yet beat a 6th grade team in their first regular season game.

Justina got the girls out to a nice lead in the first set picking up five points off of serves and also served on set point.

Another 5th grader Amy got things going in the second set collecting several points off of serves, helping the girls pull ahead 13-8.

They actually trailed in the first set 4-0 at one point, but were able to chip away and come back to take the lead.

Isabella and Annie, the two 6th graders in uniform Friday night, had impressive debuts. Isabella was really good on her serves and put six balls over the net which pretty much sealed the second set and the match.

Annie's highlight came late in the second when she ran up and smacked a ball over hand right after Amy fell over and kept a ball alive. Annie then toppled over Amy, but the girls secured the point.

On serve receive, the girls were also stellar, with Samantha returning her share of balls over the net for points. Annika was also very impressive from the serving line.

"They did a very good job," said their coach Ashley. "Their serves were amazing."
