6th grade girls win the championship

Defense does win championships after all.

The 6th grade girls completely shut down the OLP offense in the second-half en route to their first championship Saturday afternoon.

After pulling ahead to a 6-4 lead after the first quarter, they were outscored 8-1 in the second and found themselves trailing 12-7 at halftime.

But basketball is a game of runs, and the girls made their run in the third, with an effective press and timely shots. They won the third quarter battle 6-0 and were up 13-12 after three.

The game had the feeling of whoever was going to score next was going to win the game. The girls had three chances from the free-throw line on one-and-ones and weren't able to convert any of them.

But they played good enough defense, and were able to overcome Beverlyn fouling out with 6.8 seconds left to capture the victory.

It was an incredible effort today and all season as this team has only 5 girls on the team. They don't have the luxury of rest like most teams, but yet they pulled through. It is cleary one of the best stories we've had at St. Mary's.

And to think this team started their season with three straight losses in the tournament. They weren't discouraged and the hard work paid off.

Tonight, they are champions.
