5th grade hangs around, but collapses in the 4th

It's not every day you get to see a team in division 5-8 play a team in division 5-5. And it's not very often the division 5-8 team will trail by only two going into the fourth quarter.

But that's what the 5th grade did tonight in round one of the Flame Tournament, as they were down 14-12 heading into the final six minutes.

Then it all fell apart.

They were outscored 12-0 in the fourth quarter and ended up losing 24-12.

The 5th grade had no answer for the other team's press, as they turned the ball over constantly. Even before the other team pressed, they didn't do a good job taking care of the ball in quarters one through three. They had so much trouble with out of bounds plays and inbounds, it seemed like they had never done it before.

Willard did continue his hot streak, hitting two more jumpers -- a good follow up to his six point performance Saturday. Jason Z. hit a free-throw in the first for his first points of the season.

Raymond's 4 points and Willard's jumper in the third brought St. Mary's within two, but that was was close as the game got.

Despite the loss, they were able to hang with a team in the third division for three quarters. And if it wasn't for the press, they might've been able to pull off a shocking upset. But to do that, they'll need to polish up their game and stop making the simple mistakes.

Turnovers and the lack of rebounding really hurt them -- sound familiar? They are undersized as a team, but too many times, they were out of position and the other team grabbed rebound after rebound.

They'll have a chance to rectify their mistakes Wednesday night in their second round game, which starts at 6 p.m.

Grant had 3 points, while Thomas also hit a free-throw in the first.
