CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Night 1 - 5th grade salvages only win

In her St. Mary's basketball debut, Kaela scored 12 points and led the 5th grade girls to an 18-16 first round victory in the CYO preseason tournament.

She started off the game with a bang draining a jumper from the outside, one of many shots she hit on the night.

The game was back and forth the entire way with the 5th grade falling behind 15-14 midway through the fourth.

But Kaela came to the rescue scoring on a nice drive to the hoop, and fellow rookie Becky added insurance with less than a minute left with the first bucket of her career.

The other team made a free throw to cut the lead to 18-16 with 5 seconds left in the game. The 5th graders could not secure a rebound and had to play defense right underneath their hoop to prevent a game tying shot.

Off the inbounds, Kaela deflected a ball before stealing it and dribbling the ball out to give the 5th graders the win.

It was a first of many as five girls were playing in a basketball game for the first time and it showed. There were a lot of girls who looked lost and out of position, but that is expected with their first game.

Michaela added 4 points on the night.

The 5th grade will play tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in round two.

3rd graders debut with a one point loss
The youngest team in the school played their first ever basketball game tonight and lost 8-7 in a very exciting game.

Veronica and Christy both scored in the first half, as the game was tied 4-4 after two quarters.

Justina made a free throw in the second half and the other team shot in the St. Mary's basket to give the 3rd graders a 7-6 lead.

Their next shot however was in the correct basket and was the eventual game winner.

The 3rd grade girls will play Thursday night at 6 p.m.

6th grade outmatched, outplayed
The 6th grade girls were outmatched in round one of the tournament and were beaten decisively in a one-sided affair tonight in Pacifica.

Going up against a bigger and stronger team, the girls played tentative and the results showed. Three of the girls were making their debut and some of the girls looked like they were.

Kelly was the only girl who hustled throughout, but one girl was definitely not enough against a team like this.

Fiona accounted for the team's only basket of the night in the third quarter.

The girls play their next game Thursday night at 6 p.m.
