CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Day 6 - 5th grade girls lose in final round

The 5th grade girls fell 18-10 in their final game of the preseason tournament.

Michaela had a team high six points, while Kaela had her own four points.

It was 8-4 at halftime, but the 5th grade came out flat in the second half and were down 13-6 at one point.

Right now, the team looks very inexperienced and aside from a few players, a lot of girls look lost.

This, like the theme to pretty much every St. Mary's team for the girls season is a brand new team. Only two players are leftover from the team last year so team chemistry is going to take some time.

Furthermore, five of the six new girls have never played basketball until less than a month ago, so to expect everything to go smoothly in the first few games is not reasonable.

What is reasonable is that they need to improve game by game. They show bits and pieces of improvement but the consistency is still an issue.

On offense, not everyone has confidence when they touch the ball, so the ball movement is very stagnant.

Overall, the group as a whole just doesn't know the game all too well and that is problematic.

With time, they should be able to slowly pick it up, but the big question is can they do it sooner than later.

CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Day 5 - Bad day for girls teams

The 6th grade girls followed up their second round win with a disappointing performance in the final round of the CYO preseason tournament.

After getting out to a 4-0 lead, the other team went on an 8-0 run, a stretch where the girls were outplayed in every facet of the game.

Offensively, they could barely get off any good shots. On the defensive side, they couldn't grab a rebound and were always the second person to a loose ball. The other team outworked the 6th graders and it showed.

Down 10-6 with a few minutes left in the fourth, Lesly scored for the first time in her career and a putback by Edwena tied the game up with a little under two minutes to go.

They even had a chance to win the game with several lay-ups, but there were unable to score on any of their final possessions, sending the game into overtime.

In OT, it was the same story, they had the looks from close to the basket, but were unable to score.

The other team's game winning basket came off of an offensive rebound, which was the story all game long.

With 18 seconds left on the clock, Edwena had a chance to tie the game but unfortunately missed both her free throws.

Cynthia hits her first three, but 7th grade loses
The 7th grade girls were involved in a shootout early on with both teams scoring on their first two possessions.

With two minutes into the game, it was 6-6 and it looked like it was going to be a high scoring affair.

But both offenses fizzled, especially the 7th graders, and they took a 24-11 loss in the final round of the CYO preseason tournament.

Cynthia scored 9 points, including her first career 3 pointer, and Melina added 2 points in the loss.

It was a much better effort and performance for the girls this morning, as they seemed a little more focused and controlled on both sides of the court.

With that being said, they still need a lot of seasoning, and most importantly, developing their fundamentals.

They don't take care of the ball very well when they dribble or pass the ball, and that will be problematic if these trends continue.

But in three games, they already have shown improvement, and their valuable practice time will only make them a stronger unit.

3rd grade falls in final game
Sofia and Veronica scored for the 3rd grade, but it wasn't enough as they were beaten decisively in the final game of the CYO preseason tournament.

They trailed 2-0 after the 1st quarter, but then fell behind 10-0 at halftime.

From that point on the other team was on fire and they pretty much ran away with the game.

It was good to get these first few games out of the way for the girls, so they will no longer have jitters come game one of the regular season next week.

CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Night 4 - 7th grade loses in round two

Cynthia scored the only 6 points on the night for the 7th graders, as they were beaten 23-6.

The other team took advantage of the many 7th grade turnovers on the night and converted them into fast break points.

It was 14-4 at the half, he 7th grade had a chance to climb back into the game.

But a very flat second half proved to be the difference.

The girls play in their final game of the tournament tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Night 3 - Edwena's career high gives 6th grade a win

Edwena set a new career high with 7 points, and the 6th grade girls were victorious 13-5 in game two of the CYO preseason tournament.

It was a very rough games with both teams draped all over each other, but the 6th graders were able to play through the physicality and pull out a win.

They nursed a 6-3 lead and stretched out their lead to 7 points early in the fourth on buckets by Fiona and Edwena.

From the free throw line, Edwena was a very impressive 3-for-4.

The 6th grade led 2-0 after one and doubled it when Kelly hit a nice bank shot midway through the second quarter.

Jamie's jumper in the third accounted for the only 6th grade bucket in the third quarter.

It was a nice turnaround for the girls who were blown out in their first game Tuesday night. One big difference for the 6th grade was the fact they were able to get off shots, something they had trouble doing for most of the game Tuesday.

One of those girls was Rebecca, who made her St. Mary's debut. She had a fast break lay-up in the second and almost scored on the breakaway.

After two games, the team of nine are starting to blend. Four of the girls are brand new and have never played in a basketball game before this week, so there is going to be some growing pains.

So for a team that was just put together weeks ago, a win in their second game is a great building block for the rest of the season.

They will play for the consolation championship Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Night 2 - 7th grade wins!

The monkey is finally off Cynthia's back, she has now won a basketball game.

After playing basketball for two seasons, Cynthia finally got win number one as her new team, the 7th grade girls, picked up a win 11-10 in game one of the CYO preseason tournament.

After a one year hiatus from basketball, Cynthia returned and scored 2 points, and fittingly held the ball as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Like the rest of her teammates, Cynthia was a bit rusty, but the girls found a way to win the game.

It was reminiscent of a 6th grade boys game where the play is sloppy, but the plays that need to be made, are made when they are needed.

The girls trailed 6-2 after the first quarter and 8-6 at halftime.

Credit their stingy defense for allowing only 2 points the entire second half.

The game was tied 10-10 heading into the 4th quarter, but Ayanna's free throw midway through proved to be the difference.

Amy had 4 points and Julia scored the first 2 points of her career.

If you don't recognize these names it's because a lot of these girls are new or in only their second year of basketball. The bulk of the 7th graders played up a grade last year with the current 8th graders.

This year however, they have enough girls in the 7th grade to play against 7th graders, a lot easier road to take.

The game was sloppy for the most part with both teams turning the ball over, and on average a jump ball was called every two minutes.

But the good thing is that the girls were far from what they can potentially be and they still picked up a win.

They will play again Friday night at 5 p.m. from Mission Dolores.

5th graders fall in round two
Keala's 12 points were not enough for the 5th grade girls as they lose in round two of the tournament 16-13.

Coming off a two point win last night, the girls needed more balance on the scoresheet, but were unable to get it.

The girls got off to slow starts in the first and third, trailing 6-2 early before tying it by halftime 6-6.

They had another slow start in the third quarter and were behind by 5 to start the fourth. They were able to trim the lead to 14-13 with about 1:30 left in the game, but that's as close as they got.

With the ball, the 5th grade had a chance to go ahead but they couldn't break the press, turning the ball over, which lead to an easy bucket by the other team to finish the scoring for the night.

Michaela had the only other point, as she hit a free throw.

The girls conclude their tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. from Mission Dolores.

CYO Preseason Girls Tournament: Night 1 - 5th grade salvages only win

In her St. Mary's basketball debut, Kaela scored 12 points and led the 5th grade girls to an 18-16 first round victory in the CYO preseason tournament.

She started off the game with a bang draining a jumper from the outside, one of many shots she hit on the night.

The game was back and forth the entire way with the 5th grade falling behind 15-14 midway through the fourth.

But Kaela came to the rescue scoring on a nice drive to the hoop, and fellow rookie Becky added insurance with less than a minute left with the first bucket of her career.

The other team made a free throw to cut the lead to 18-16 with 5 seconds left in the game. The 5th graders could not secure a rebound and had to play defense right underneath their hoop to prevent a game tying shot.

Off the inbounds, Kaela deflected a ball before stealing it and dribbling the ball out to give the 5th graders the win.

It was a first of many as five girls were playing in a basketball game for the first time and it showed. There were a lot of girls who looked lost and out of position, but that is expected with their first game.

Michaela added 4 points on the night.

The 5th grade will play tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in round two.

3rd graders debut with a one point loss
The youngest team in the school played their first ever basketball game tonight and lost 8-7 in a very exciting game.

Veronica and Christy both scored in the first half, as the game was tied 4-4 after two quarters.

Justina made a free throw in the second half and the other team shot in the St. Mary's basket to give the 3rd graders a 7-6 lead.

Their next shot however was in the correct basket and was the eventual game winner.

The 3rd grade girls will play Thursday night at 6 p.m.

6th grade outmatched, outplayed
The 6th grade girls were outmatched in round one of the tournament and were beaten decisively in a one-sided affair tonight in Pacifica.

Going up against a bigger and stronger team, the girls played tentative and the results showed. Three of the girls were making their debut and some of the girls looked like they were.

Kelly was the only girl who hustled throughout, but one girl was definitely not enough against a team like this.

Fiona accounted for the team's only basket of the night in the third quarter.

The girls play their next game Thursday night at 6 p.m.

5th grade loses heartbreaker in championship

In one of the most exciting championship games in recent St. Mary's history, the 5th grade boys were defeated in heartbreaking fashion 26-25 Saturday afternoon at Mission Dolores.

Jason L. scored on a putback with less than 40 seconds left to go in the 4th quarter, giving the 5th grade boys basketball team a 25-24 lead in the championship Saturday afternoon.

But right off the next inbounds, Jonathan was whistled for a ticky-tack foul to say it nicely, sending the other team's best player, #24, to the free throw line for a one-in-one.

He hit both free throws and put the 5th graders down a point.

Off of the inbounds, Michael took the ball coast to coast and was fouled on his drive to the basket, giving him a chance for a one-in-one.

But on his first free throw attempt, he crossed the line for the third free-throw violation of the game giving the ball back to the other team.

The other team's best player, #24 took it down-court and lost the ball out of bounds and with 25.9 seconds left, the 5th grade had a chance to possibly win the game.

The first pass went to Michael who then shoveled it off to Jonathan. Jonathan had the ball at the three point line when he dished the ball down low to Justin, who hesitated before shooting. Because of the delay, the other team was able to get in good position for a block.

Justin was a good head shorter than his defender so his attempt at a shot was batted down right away. The other team then dribbled out the clock for the final 15 seconds and the game ended.

If the 5th grade was counting on lucky bounces or calls, very few of them went the St. Mary's way.

In the first half, someone in the stands coughed during a free throw attempt, and because that is unsportsmanlike, the officials at the table awarded an extra free throw to the other team. They made both.

The biggest break that went against the 5th graders was the foul call on Jonathan. Right after the 5th grade went ahead, Jonathan was caught in an awkward position and did make slight contact with #24. But the contact was so minimal that #24 was able to easily break away and dribble down court.

Had the whistle not blown, it's unlikely anyone in the gym would've even considered or cared that was a foul.

But by no means were those bad breaks the reason why the 5th grade lost.

From the free-throw line, Jonathan was not his usual self, going 2-for-6. He did have a team high 14 points, but he was unable to hit the open jump shots we were all accustomed to seeing.

Michael had a rough day from the line, committing a violation on all three of his free-throw tries. All three were on the front end of a one-in-one.

The slow start was also not good for the 5th grade. Jonathan got the ball right off the tip and put St. Mary's ahead just seconds into the game, but that was the only bucket they'd score in the first quarter.

#24 who the 5th graders knew they had to shut down, was minimized as the game went on, but still had a game high 16 points, none bigger than his two free throws at the end. He was 6-for-8 from the line.

So the 5th grade season comes to a close, one of the most exciting seasons to date.

From here the 5th graders will be moving up a division and maybe two. These are the games that they will be playing on a more consistent basis for years to come.

What worked against them was that they were so efficient during the regular season, they barely played any close games. And when the games are so tight, and the margin of error so thin, one thing can be the difference between first and second.

Unfortunately, the 5th graders had to learn this lesson the hard way.

Nonetheless, it was a remarkable season by their coaches Leslie and Dennison, and all of their players. It was pretty much everything you could want out of a season besides a championship.

Patience is virtue, as the best things in life are worth the wait.

5th grade championship preview

In less than 24 hours, the 5th grade boys basketball team will be going for the championship in Saturday's title game at Mission Dolores.

The team of seven, with three new players, will try to put their names in the St. Mary's record books with a win tomorrow afternoon.

That will definitely not be easy as they go up against OLV in a rematch of the only game the 5th graders lost this season.

Much of the attention will be focused on #24 on the other team, who is one of the quickest 5th graders in San Francisco. Not only can he score, but he also makes his teammates better, evident by the way he sees the court and pass the ball. Containing him is going to be a top priority.

As for the 5th graders, they are going to have to play like they have in all their wins this year, and it starts with defense.

Defensively they have been able to shut teams down in long spurts and that's exactly what they are going to have to do to secure a win.

Rebounding, which was a problem in some of their games, has improved dramatically in the last few. This is not the biggest team but they are good at getting the inside position, which is crucial to grabbing boards.

Offensively, they can score on the fast break or in the half court which makes them all the more dangerous.

Jonathan is as good as it gets when it comes to an open shot and they will need to find ways to get him the clean looks.

On the fast break, Michael has been solid all year, demonstrating exceptional speed and having the ability to break away from the pack If he gets those opportunities in the game tomorrow, he will need to capitalize.

Most importantly, the team needs to just play with confidence and up to their capability. If they can play their game, and limit their own mistakes, this game is theirs for the taking.

It's going to be an exciting afternoon tomorrow so wear red and don't miss out on all the action.

Hope to see you all there!

7th grade boys post-mortem and video

It is a time-honored tradition here on the blog where we take a look at what went well (or good) and what went wrong for our teams as we close out the basketball season.

Tonight we will start with the 7th grade boys.

Since I have been Athletic Director here at St. Mary's, I don't think I have come across another team with as much potential to do great things as the current 7th grade boys.

Year after year, sport after sport, it's the same thing that I as well as many others continue to preach.

But for whatever reason, they seem to come up just short.

Part of their misfortunes, at least in basketball, are in due part to their talent level. They have always been in the 5th division -- which is competitive -- not to the point where they are manhandled -- but on the other hand -- not to the point where they can blow teams out either.

They are stuck in the middle and I've used the comparison to the Warriors, where they aren't good enough to be good, and they aren't bad enough to be bad.

If this team dropped a division, or two, they'd win a championship. But that's not going to happen with a (5-3) record.

So what needs to happen? They just need to get better.

Two huge problems all year, transition defense, and inbounds. Both of them were atrocious to say the least in their playoff game. If either one of those were better Friday night, the 7th grade would be playing for a championship in two days.

This team has trouble getting back on defense. Part of that is because Justin is a point guard who can score and at times is not sitting at the top of the key. He will take the ball in and nobody rotates out to the point to be the last man back.

If you watch the video, it's also poor decision making on the wings, because a lot of times they crash the board for an offensive rebound they have absolutely no hope of getting.

Against such a big team, the wings need to concede the rebound if the shot doesn't go in the basket. Instead, they would take two or three steps in, and then the ball would go the other way.

Inbounds, just bad, all bad. Part of it lies on the shoulder of the passer, and part of it lies on the people not getting open.

This team lacks ball handlers, and if Justin is blanketed, this team can't move the ball.

Let's touch on the good, this team can score. Brandon T., his shot as weird as it looks, is effective shooting the ball. He was one of the few players on the team who could take the shot from the outside and make it.

When this team fast breaks, they build momentum and are hard to keep up with.

They are also a resilient bunch as they have been down double digits in games this year and have found ways to climb back into games.

But as we mention the p word with potential, we also have to mention the m word and maturity.

This team still lacks it. The team chemistry is not where it should be. They don't communicate well on the court, and at their level of play, it needs to improve.

At practice, they still goof off too much. In post game huddles, there are players that need a scolding because they are still goofing around. Sometimes they forget they are in 7th grade, and little things add up, and hurt them on the court.

One year left as the 7th graders will try to get over the hump in their final year. Since the 5th grade, they have made the playoffs every year and gotten bounced in the playoffs. In 4th grade, they were (4-4) and would've made the playoffs if it wasn't for a forfeit when two players didn't show up for a game.

Whether they move up a division or not, they are going to have to elevate their game and really earn their spot to even get into the playoffs. They are going to face the toughest task of their careers, but if any team has the potential to do it, it is the 7th grade boys.

5th grade going to championship

Out of the five St. Mary's boys playoff teams, four had already lost. So the last hope for a championship sat squarely on the shoulders of the heavily favored 5th grade boys Sunday night.

So they made sure the school would be represented in a title game, and did so in a big way.

Jonathan scored a game high 21 points, leading the 5th grade boys to a 36-16 win, securing their spot in the championship game for the first time in team history.

Even though the final margin of victory was quite lopsided, the game felt everything but, as every time the 5th grade would try to extend their lead, the opposition would come right back.

It was 8-4 in favor of the 5th graders at the end of one, but the other team tied it 8-8 midway through the second.

St. Mary's led at the half 18-10, but saw their lead cut in half within the first two minutes of the third quarter. Neither team would score a bucket from that point forward until the 5th grade exploded with a minute left in the third.

Off a pass from Michael, Jonathan banked in what was probably the ugliest looking shot he had taken all year, a heave towards the basket that hit off glass and rattled into the hoop.

Jonathan picked up a loose ball on the next possession and drove down the court for an easy lay-up to extend their lead back to four -- they weren't done.

Michael stripped the other team's point guard and headed the other way for a lay-up. He couldn't get it to go but Jonathan was there to put it back in.

And with 10 seconds left to go in the third, Michael, like an all-pro cornerback intercepted a pass, went down the court once again to attempt another lay-up. He had a rough go making his lay-ups but his teammates were their to pick him up. Jonathan grabbed the rebound, missed his putback, but Jason L. managed to convert from close range right before the buzzer buzzed.

In 60 seconds, the 5th grade went on an 8-0 run to pretty much put the game away.

Their offensive display continued through the fourth and when it was all said and done, they outscored their opponent 18-2 in the final seven minutes of the game.

Jonathan was on fire in the first half, hitting all but one of his shots from the field. When he has an open look, more than likely it's going to go in the basket.

Not only was Jonathan effective shooting, but he was great setting up his teammates.

He made several beautiful passes in the game including a feed up-court to Jason L. in the second quarter that was perfectly placed, as Jason camped right by the basket for an easy lay-up.

Even with the incredible game by Jonathan, his 21 points is still a point shy of the St. Mary's modern day playoff record for most points in a game that Jonathan himself set last year, when he had 22 points in a sudden death overtime playoff loss. He accounted for 22 of his team's 26 points on the day, a very Raymond-like feat. But in this game, he had great support from his teammates.

Jason L. continues to make strides as he was a beast on the boards once again, earning himself more playing time with 6 points off the bench in the second quarter. He had 8 points total for the game.

Jason H. hit both his free throws in the first quarter and scored 4 points, while Michael had a really nice And-1 in the fourth as he scored 3 points in his first career playoff game.

Not to be overlooked is the defense the boys played down the stretch as Allen, Justin and Ryan all worked hard to keep the other team from getting off easy shots.

After the lead was cut to four early in the third, the 5th grade's defense locked down the other team and prevented them from getting any good looks at the hoop.

They'll need to play that same type of defense against the only team that has beaten the 5th graders this season, OLV.

In their first meeting, the 5th grade lost by 8 points, but a bunch of those points came at the tail end of the game when the 5th grade was desperately pressing.

It's not going to be an easy game by any means but the 5th grade is definitely up for the challenge.

A lot will be focused on the other team's best player, #24, who is not only quick, but can pass the ball and get his teammates involved.

So the stage is set for one of the most anticipated St. Mary's championships in years. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at 3:15 p.m. from Mission Dolores.

"I think we have a really good chance," said coach Leslie. "So it's going to be a really good rematch."

Raymond's career high not enough as 6th grade ousted

Look no further than the 6th grade playoff game this afternoon as to why basketball is a team game.

Despite one of the best performances by a player in St. Mary's playoff history, the 6th grade's quest for a second straight championship went up in flames in a 28-22 loss.

Raymond had a remarkable game and scored 18 of the team's 22 points, and it still wasn't enough to get them to a second straight title game.

In a game that was close throughout, Raymond was the only one of the eight players on the team that hit a field goal during the game.

He relentless drove to the basket and almost single handedly carried his team to victory.

Unfortunately, their defense, press, rebounding, and pretty much everything outside of a Raymond drive to the basket was missing.

No longer could they hide their weaknesses, not in a playoff game with so much at stake.

Offensively, the ball stalled like it did for most of the year. If Raymond didn't have a lane to drive to the basket, there would be no points scored.

None of the players on the wing, Jason N., Jason Z., Grant could get anything going. Any time they drove they ended up either losing the ball or throwing up a low percentage shot.

Their post players, Garrick, The Twins and Ryan were all held in check, unable to score down low.

Defensively, they were a bit slow to the ball and unable to get any positioning inside the key. The other team was able to pass the ball into the paint and drive into the key setting up a lot of make-able shots.

Even with their lackluster performance, they still held a 19-15 lead going into the fourth, mainly thanks to Raymond's ability to draw fouls. They were already in the bonus to start the fourth.

But the other team went on a furious 9-0 run in the final six minutes, capped off by a 3 pointer which made it a 24-19 game with about two minutes to go.

Desperation began to set in as it become a game of fouling the other team to get the ball back.

Their best chance to make it a one possession game was when Garrick rebounded a free throw, and just missed a put back which would've cut the lead down to three.

Instead, they were forced to foul and the other team sank two free throws to close the season on the 6th grade boys.

This will undoubtedly be a tough pill to swallow for a team that had such high aspirations of reaching the championship for the second straight year. At (7-1), they were on track for a collision course with the number one team in the division, but that rematch will never happen.

In a season where they moved up a division, record wise they were really good, even great. They had their share of things they had to and still need to work on, but the bottom line was that they found ways to win games. But sooner or later, it was going to catch up with them and their playoff game was when it finally caught up.

Next season, they will likely ascend the divisions again, and will need to elevate their game to the next level.

And hopefully the bitter taste in their mouths will push them to the level they are capable of playing.

Top seed too much for the 3rd grade

The 3rd grade boys lost 19-8 in their playoff game this morning, concluding their first season of basketball here at St. Mary's.

Brendan had a team high 4 points, while Nathan and Calvin each chipped in with two points apiece.

Up against the number one seed in the division, the 3rd graders trailed from start to finish, as it was 8-0 by the end of the first.

Their opponent moved the ball at a real good pace, and made a lot of outside shots, something the 3rd graders could not do.

In the case with any game, a team usually either beats the other team or one team will find a way to beat itself. Today, the 3rd graders were clearly beaten by a superior team.

The 3rd grade wraps up their first season of basketball with a playoff berth, the first time a St. Mary's 3rd grade team has made the playoffs in close to 10 years.

They finished the regular season needing to win two straight, and with their backs against the wall, came through.

Adding to the record books, they also recorded the first basketball shutout in the modern day era of St Mary's Athletics.

After getting down early, Brendan hit his two shots in the second quarter including a real nice runner from long range. The score was 12-4 at halftime.

Calvin had a nice pump fake and dribble to the basket for his points and Nathan scored late in the game to account for his bucket.

Close, but not enough for the 7th grade boys

The 7th grade boys were looking for their first ticket to a championship by pulling off an upset against the No. 1 seeded and undefeated team.

With a little under four minutes left in the game, they nursed a 24-21 lead and were on the brink of their biggest win in team history.

But their mistakes that dug them an early 10-2 hole also led to their demise at the end.

And when it was all said and done, the 7th grade, for the third straight year, were eliminated from the playoffs in the semi-finals. The final was 35-28.

It was a hard fought game by the 7th graders, and a heck of an effort, but the difference between winning and losing in their division always comes down to a handful of plays in the game.

In quarters two and three, the 7th grade had the upper hand, but it was the beginning and the end that were missing.

To start the game, they missed so many lay-ups inside, causing them to climb uphill the entire game.

Daniel didn't help matters as he continued to lob inbounds passes that led to several turnovers throughout the game. His teammates also didn't help Daniel out much as they had trouble getting open whenever he had to inbound the ball.

Offensively, Justin had a rough first half and had trouble hitting shots that he is normally pretty consistent with.

Brandon T. provided a spark off the bench, rattling in a jumper and banking in a 3 pointer in the second quarter. Those were his only five points on the night.

At halftime, the 7th grade trailed 14-10.

As their head coach James always preaches, defense leads to offense and that's what happened in the third. They were able to get stops on the defensive end which lead to some fast breaks.

They eventually took the lead on a pair of Justin free throws early in the fourth. He had 12 points in the game.

It was a see-saw battle the rest of the way with the teams trading baskets until the other team eventually pulled away in the final minute of the game.

Down 31-28, Brandon T. had a good look from the corner but his game tying three bounced off the rim.

After the other team extended their lead with a free throw, Brendan Quock had a chance to bring the 7th grade within two when he was fouled. Brendan missed the first shot of his one-and-one and a golden opportunity slipped away.

Justin had the same chance Brendan did on the last position, but he too was unable to hit the first of two possible free throws.

The other team had the ball at midcourt with about 30 seconds left to go in the game when they found one of their post players wide open in the paint. The post players for the 7th grade were caught out of position and the player on the other team just turned and rimmed in a shot over Brandon T. who committed a foul on the play, to send the other team to the line for an and-one.

Following the made free throw, the lead was seven and that's how the game came to an end.

Yet again, the 7th graders found themselves in an all too familiar position, losing in the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

It was an inspiring effort for a team that at times this season lacked life. Their effort definitely wasn't in question tonight as all the boys really played their hearts out.

But games aren't won on just pure effort, they needed some better execution.

All year, their turnovers were instrumental in the games they had loss, and tonight was no different. They were able to break the press pretty easily but it goes back to the inbounds plays, which were abysmal.

Their transition defense was also very poor. Every time they missed a shot, they were slow getting back and out of position. The other team had so many extra opportunities to score on offensive rebounds, and those extra points loom big in such a close game.

Size was also a key factor as the other team had players twice the size of Aaron and James. The disparity on the glass eventually was too much to overcome.

At (5-3), they completed their most successful regular season in their five year history as a team. The bad news is because of their record, they are likely to move up a division, or at the least, stay in the same division.

Since the 3rd grade, they have not had the liberty of playing in a low division and have always played against strong opponents.

This year, they were able to pick up an extra win in the regular season, which was a big deal for a team that had finished three years in a row at (4-4).

But now they are going to have to take that extra step and move into the next level if they want to make their final year at St. Mary's one for the ages.

Shorthanded DeMarillac 8th graders bounced in playoffs

Any hope for an upset was vanished a few minutes into the DeMarillac 8th grade's playoff game this evening, as they dug themselves a 14-0 hole midway through the first quarter.

To make matters worse, Julio was absent from the lineup and their second leading scorer was missing, in a game that his presence was definitely needed.

The team they faced was undefeated during the regular season and clearly better than the 8th graders. Not very often is this excuse used here on the blog, but it was apparent to anybody who has ever seen a basketball in their life that they did not belong in this division.

With that being said, the DeMarillac boys didn't do themselves any favors by turning the ball over at will in the first half. Defensively, they couldn't grab any rebounds and were always the second man to the ball.

It was apparent by the body language in the first half that the 8th grade was frustrated and it took them a while to really focus and just play basketball. Down by so much early in the game is very deflating and the boys let it get to them and continued to make the same mistakes.

They put it together for the start of the second half and Pablo hit a 3 pointer to jump start the offense. He had a team high 7 points. Anthony also chipped in with 6 points in his final game in a St. Mary's uniform.

Santiago made a shot in the first half and Jon Jett hit a three late in the game to conclude the scoring.

The 8th grade (DM) finished the regular season (5-3) and were ousted in the first round of the playoffs.

One game they will look back on more than tonight's was their effort and execution a week ago. Had they won last week, they wouldn't have had to play the number one seed in the playoffs. They lost by a point and instead were fed to the wolves.

Nonetheless it was still a pretty good season for this team as half of the team had never played an organized basketball game until 8th grade. They had a lot of catching up to do in terms of experience and were able to hold their ground for most of the year.

They rarely had a full team practice as one or two, or even half of the team was missing on a regular basis, so there were a lot of obstacles the team had to overcome.

My favorite hockey player growing up hangs up his skates

When I was growing up, I had a favorite player or players in every sport, Barry Bonds and Will Clark, Michael Jordan, Steve Young and Jerry Rice, and one name that probably nobody knows of, and that's Owen Nolan.

Nolan was the poster boy and the superstar of the San Jose Sharks as I started watching hockey. He was as tough as they come. He could skate pretty well for a guy his size, handle the puck, score, play physical and fight.

I went to a game back in 2000, my first NHL playoff game with Larry, also known as Mr. Wong. In that game Nolan scored two goals and the Sharks won 2-1. Til this day, it's one of the best games I have ever been to in my life.

There was just something about Owen Nolan that captivated me, the same way some superstars in sports captivate you and audiences.

I always wished that some day he would come back and play for the Sharks, but that dream never happened. Today, he retired from the NHL as a San Jose Shark.

He could barely get through his short speech, as he was holding back tears.

With his family in the front row, he thanked everybody from the Sharks organization, to the teammates he had, and to the fans.

I have an Owen Nolan jersey that I actually bought at JCPenny for only $30. That might've been the best $30 I have ever spent in my life.

So take the time and watch these videos of him in action. I will also include one at the bottom which is one of the most famous goals in NHL All-Star Game history where he called his shot. He pointed to the goalie and then where he was going to shoot the puck, and he buried it into the net.

He finished his career with 422 career goals.

Week 8 Highlights

Super Bowl Prediction

Patriots 27-17 over the Giants

3rd grade clinches final playoff spot with shutout

The 3rd grade boys pitched a shutout and secured a playoff berth with a 8-0 win this morning.

Offensively, they had a slow start as they only lead 1-0 at the half, the points coming on a Brendan free throw.

However, they extended their lead to 6-0 going into the fourth quarter, thanks to a free throw by Calvin and two buckets by Brendan. Calvin later on added a nice bank shot for two of his 3 points.

A lot was on the line as the winner of the game would be in the playoffs and the losing team's season would come to an end. So the first year players answered the challenge and sent the other team home packing.

At (4-4), they will be the number third seed in the playoffs, going up against the number two seed. The winner of that game will advance to the championship.

It's been an up and down season for the boys, but they've manage to claw to .500 winning their final two games of the year.

The team has really started to come together in the last week or so, working together on offense and defense.

With four wins and a post-season berth already in their first year, this team could be destined to make some noise not only in the playoffs, but for years to come.

6th grade follows blue print, pick up 7th win

Ryan had a career high 6 points as the 6th graders finished the regular season with a 17-12 victory.

It was the same script the 6th graders have used for the last two years, scoring when they need to, and getting stops when they need to.

It was a brutal first half to endure as the boys had countless looks at the hoop by the bucket, but were having trouble scoring. They also had their share of turnovers, all leading to a 6-5 halftime deficit.

However the the pace really picked up in the 3rd quarter as the teams traded leads until a free throw by Joseph tied the game at 12-12 heading into the fourth.

Garrick came out of nowhere to corral a rebound to put the boys ahead and off of a steal on the press, Raymond added in two of his 6 points.

Thomas added a free throw late in the game to round out the scoring.

For the second straight season, the 6th graders end the regular season at (7-1) and will have the second seed in the playoffs.

None of their victories this year have been dominant, but the good teams always find a way to win. And that's what the 6th graders have managed to do up until this point.

But a repeat as champions is going to take more than just finding a way to win, because their playoff competition is going to be stiff.

The biggest problem is the lack of ball movement and offense in the half court. When Raymond doesn't get out on the fast break, the team stalls on offense, like they did in the first half.

On a positive note however, they do get scoring from a lot of different places, as evident with the distributed scoring this afternoon.

Ryan and Garrick both were able to get some points because of their offensive awareness around the paint. It's going to take those type of efforts for the 6th grade to make a run in the post-season.

For the second straight game, Jason Zhao banked in a jump shot.

8th grade's final game is a forfeit

The last scheduled St. Mary's game this season is a forfeit.

7th grade hangs on for dear life, clinch final playoff spot

The 7th grade has finally gotten over the .500 hump, as they hung on for a 27-24 victory, sending them to the playoffs for the third straight year.

After an incredible third quarter, which saw the 7th grade break open a close game, they almost self destructed in the latter stages of the 4th quarter.

It was 12-8 at halftime, but the 7th grade came out in the 3rd quarter and absolutely blew the game wide open. A four point lead became a 14 point lead after the end of three.

Then came the final seven minutes where the boys reverted to their poor play, not taking care of the ball and not playing defense. They also stopped scoring.

Slowly, their 25-11 lead began to shrink.

Up 26-21, the 7th grade had the ball but they committed one of their many turnovers in the game in the backcourt. The other team took advantage, moved the ball around, and then nailed one of their several 3 pointers in the fourth to make it a 26-24 ballgame.

Even with a lead, the 7th grade seemed to keep rushing to get up the court. They weren't calm and played sloppy, turning the ball over on many occasions by their own basket.

With 12 seconds left, the other team had a chance to tie the game, but Daniel came up with a much needed steal. He was fouled and then split his free throws at the line giving the 7th grade the three point edge and the eventual victory.

The game was called really tight by the referees and it played to the 7th grade's advantage as they drew 13 fouls in the first half alone.

From the foul line, the 7th graders were a respectable 10-for-22, although there have been worse shooting days by this team. Daniel went 6-for-9 from the line, but was held without a field goal the entire game.

All seven players who dressed scored at least a point. Brandon Tom hit a 3 pointer early in the game, the first in his career.

Christian had a solid game as he was a presence down low at times, blocking shots and converting on some putbacks by the hoop. He finished with 6 points.

Come playoff time, they'll get some reinforcement down low as Brendan took off his cast yesterday and should be available for the playoff game. Brendan's size will be a definite asset for this undersized team as it is forced to play Brandon Tom down in the post at times.

At (5-3), they will enter the playoffs for the third consecutive season, and the first time with a winning record. In their past three seasons, they finished (4-4).

5th grade cruises in their final regular season game

The 5th grade made a statement against a team they will most likely play in the first round with a 42-16 thumping.

They actually were down 4-0 to start the game and Jonathan was struggling early on to find his shot. But good shooters need to keep shooting and that's what Little Johnny did.

When it was all said and done, Jonathan finished with a game high 20 points and 8 assists.

Michael registered his career high with 11 points.

Jason L., one of the new players to this team has really transformed into a dominant presence down low, as he was great on the boards, grabbing rebound after rebound. He also had a career high with 8 points.

The team they played as no slouch, as their opponent is slated to be the No. 3 seed in the division. This sets up a potential playoff rematch between the two squads, and a big victory like this should give the 5th grade a definite edge psychologically going into their next game.

But a lot of crazy things can happen, so the 5th graders need to play the same way they did tonight to avoid an upset.

Last season, they blew out the team they played in the playoffs in the regular season. But their season came to an abrupt end in a sudden death overtime loss.

This year however is a different team. With three new players, they have a better grip of the game and really emphasize defense.

"Overall our defense was great," said coach Dennison Fong, who is also a vegetarian.

Their final regular season is (7-1), a pretty impressive feat. They'll go into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed and will look to continue their winning ways for a shot at the championship game.

DeMarillac 8th graders fall short in come back

After a (5-0) start to the regular season, the DeMarillac 8th graders looked like they were serious title contenders.

But after their third straight loss tonight, they'll backpedal into the playoffs on a three game losing streak.

They fell behind and were 29-18 in the fourth quarter, but made an incredible comeback only to fall short 34-32.

Pablo had a game high 16 points in the loss.

Julio was not 100% and played with a noticeable limp in the second half and still managed to score 8 points.

What comes next for the boys is not going to be easy. With the loss, they finish the season with a (5-3) record and will have to play the undefeated first place team in their home gym.

Feel good stories, parents watching in the crowd

In the Sharks 6-0 win last night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Sharks starting goalie Antti Niemi played in an NHL game for the first time with his father watching from the stands.

What's interesting to know is that Niemi is a Stanley Cup winner so you would think his father would've been able to see him play at least once during his playoff run two years ago when he was with the Blackhawks.

I remember working at CBS-5 a few years ago and a Florida Marlins player, Logan Morrison played in front of his father for the first time in the summer of 2010.

What's the big deal with that? Morrison's father was battling cancer, and he took a 30 hour train ride just to watch his son play in the big leagues.

Now the question I pose to many of you, do you like it when your parents come to your games?

I know a handful of players do not like this, because it makes them nervous. Then I know there are some who have parents that never come to the games because of work or they are simply too busy, who would love to have their mom or dad, or both, come see them in action.

When I played, I leaned toward having my parents come watch me, and they did every now and then, but not on a regular basis because of their work schedule.

So please vote on the blog as I is curious to see where you stand.
