3rd/4th grade coaches reflect

When we were asked to coach the 3rd/4th grade girl’s basketball team,
we jumped aboard to be a part of St. Mary’s Athletics. Little did we know our responsibilities as basketball coaches -- the three of us were inexperienced coaches but rather experienced on the court. We were about to embark on a journey that would cultivate our minds as we mature.

Our biggest challenge to winning games was the lack of experience and familiarity with the game, but that did not get in our way of success, because we had determination.

At the beginning of the season, the six young girls, who represented the St. Mary’s 3rd/ 4th grade basketball team, were off to an unknown and rough start since they barely knew the game of basketball. As a rookie team, they had to develop and work
together to accomplish their goals. Unlike other coaches who have experience,
we were the newcomers and did not know what to expect. However, it was gratifying
to see them come to each practice; we saw the steadily improvement made by the
girls.

Even though we were short on time with practices before our first game,
the team exercised the fundamentals of basketball and managed to keep up with
their opponents. At each practice and game, they showed tons of improvement and determination to win. Game after game after game, we were so close to winning.

To cap off the season of learning and growing experiences, we are very proud of the six young girls who had the courage to take the challenges we put forth. With the lack of raw talent in the young girls, it was a difficult task we faced throughout the season. Although it was not what we hoped for we were still proud of these girls for showing love for the greatest sport played, basketball.

We hope each girl has learned something new as we have also grasped more than we have expected. The more time we spent with the girls, the more we learned to overcome the many challenging obstacles together. We look forward to seeing them succeed in the future and wish them the best. Its summer…LET’S PARTY!
