Energy lacking, but 6th grade scores at the end to win

The old saying goes, "A win is a win."

Our 6th graders have learned to perfect that in the last two years.

After losing for the first time this season last week, the 6th grade grinded out an ugly 10-8 victory earlier this afternoon to improve to (5-1) on the season.

Tied at 8-8 with about a minute to go, coach John Wang drew up a play to get the ball to Raymond on the right side. The pass found Raymond in the corner, who then penetrated through the defense for the game winning lay-up.

The other team went to the free throw line with a chance to tie but missed both free throws and the 6th graders somehow, someway found a way to win a game that lacked any type of excitement.

It was a defensive struggle with neither team wanting to take control of the game. It went back and forth and stayed in single digits until the final bucket.

Raymond had a game high 8 points, but shot 2-of-10 from the free throw line and missed an easy wide open lay-up off of a nice steal.

Garrick accounted for the only other points of the game when he grabbed a nice offensive rebound and banked in his shot right after in the first quarter.

There was just no flow to this game, as the 6th graders weren't able to create turnovers and get running in transition. In the half court, the game stalled as passes would go from station to station. Movement away from the ball was non-existent.

Too many times someone on the team would just put their head down, and then throw up a shot, a common theme for whenever this team tends to struggle.

By the way they play their games, they don't look like a team that has only loss once this season, but they always find a way to win.

They score when they need to and make defensive stops when they need to. It's just that it would make it a lot easier on everyone else and themselves if they were able to consistently play at a good level.

The 6th grade played with only 7 players, as Jason Ng was absent from this afternoon's contest.
