7th grade DMA wins in sudden death OT

In an instant classic, the 7th grade DeMarillac boys needed sudden death overtime to win their final game of the regular season 30-28.

On their second possession in sudden death, Edzon reached out just enough so the other team couldn't steal the ball. And with a few dribbles he had a clear lane to the basket. His lay-up went up and in and pandemonium ensued.

Both teams had plenty of chances to win it in regulation and in overtime, but the ball would not comply.

Alfonso was at the free throw line with the game tied at 26-26 with 4.2 seconds left in the 4th quarter but missed both shots, sending the game to overtime.

In OT, Vince and Alfonso both scored and the 7th graders led 28-27 with 50 seconds to go in the extra frame. The other team tied it at 28-28 with a free throw.

They had several chances to go ahead before time ran out, but could not score.

With two seconds on the clock, Edzon had a good look at a lay-up and shot it long sending the game into sudden death.

In grades 6-8 in CYO, there is no clock in the sudden death overtime period, and the first team to two points wins.

Luckily, it was the 7th graders.

The game was see-saw battle which saw the 7th graders (4-4) trail 17-11 in the 3rd quarter, but they made a strong push and finally took a 23-22 lead in the 4th quarter.

They were also plagued by foul trouble from start to finish, with Matthew picking up four fouls in the 1st quarter. Edzon also had four fouls by the end of the third.

In the end, the boys prevailed and it was a much needed victory, because instead of traveling to play the first place team in the playoffs, they sealed the third seed and will get to play a team they have beaten earlier this season.

After starting the season (0-4), the DMA boys have rallied off four straight heading into the playoffs.

Tyler, 2 points, and Alfonso both had their strongest games of the year. Vince and Matthew both had 4 points.

Edzon set a new career high with 15 points, including the much needed game winner in overtime.
