8th grade girls sluggish in win

If the 8th grade girls thought they were going to dominate their opponent like they did Saturday, it didn't show.

The girls led 4-2 in a flat first half that could be summarized as just plain bad. For two 8th grade teams, a combined 6 points is not good any way you cut it.

Saturday, these same two teams met and the 8th grade girls held a 18-0 advantage after two quarters. Sunday, by only a bucket.

Give the other team credit as they were stringy and played a real scrappy game, not giving the 8th grade girls any room to operate, forcing turnovers and some bad shots.

The other team actually had the better of the scoring chances in the first half but were unable to make their lay-ups.

In the 3rd quarter, the 8th grade doubled their point total from the first half and led 8-2 going into the fourth where they were able to pull away.

The girls started making some shots around the key, and their defense continued to give up nothing. Some quick baskets to start the final seven minutes pushed the 8th grade girls lead to 16-2 and the girls could collectively breathe a sigh of relief.

Maria continued her strong play underneath, scoring a career high 8 points, while Amanda matched her with 8 points of her own.

Amanda broke away twice in the final 30 seconds for lay-ups to add to her total on the afternoon.

To this point, the 8th grade has not been tested until this afternoon. They've had blowout games in each of their first three games and today's contest could be counted one as well if you factor in the margin of victory.

However in three of their four games, they've held small leads going into halftime.

But if the girls play up to their potential, every game could be a laugher, because this team has the ability to be that good.

The first half was an indication of how it would look if things went bad, while the final quarter was one that displayed where they can look real good.

Jocelyn added 6 points and Pamela 2 points.
