8th grade girls pull away in second half

The 8th grade girls jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, and everybody in the gym thought it would be smooth sailing the rest of the way. Everybody except the other team.

Their opponent scored 8 quick points in the last few minutes of the first half, and all of a sudden we had ourselves a ball game as the girls led only 13-8 at the break.

But eventually the 8th grade girls found their comfort zone, outscoring the other team 22-8 in the second half, en route to a 35-16 win to start the season.

This was the first game for the 8th graders as they did not participate in the tournament. They had originally been scheduled to play in the preseason tilt, but they couldn't find a fifth player.

Eventually, that fifth player was Lili, who banked in a jumper in the second half for the first basket of her CYO playing career.

Jocelyn and Amanda both set career highs in the win, with Jocelyn scoring 11 points and Amanda 10 points.

The game had an ominous beginning as Pamela hurt her ankle less than a minute into the game. The girls then had to kill off a power-play, playing 4-on-5 for the next few minutes before Pamela re-entered the game.

Even not at 100%, Pamela managed to chip in with 8 points.

Only five of the six players were in uniform for Sunday afternoon's game. Not only was Pamela's ankle troublesome, but Amanda picked up 3 fouls in the first half.

Foul trouble is something the girls are going to have to watch throughout the season, because this group can be an aggressive bunch. And sometimes being too aggressive will result in a lot of foul calls.

As of today, the 8th grade girls have yet to have a full team practice with all 6 players in attendance, so a lot of today was based on purely basketball instinct.

In the first half, they clearly looked like a team of individuals, but the more they played together, the more they were able to work together and build a lead. The second half was a perfect example.

Maria added 4 points in the win.
