7th/8th grade soccers wins for the first time!

It wasn't pretty, but the result was what they wanted.

Derek scored on a penalty kick in the 1st quarter, and Tommy scored on a corner-kick in the 3rd quarter, as the 7th/8th graders won for the first time in team history.

By all means, this was a sloppy game by both teams, but the team did just enough to hang on for the victory. The first goal was set up when the offense was inside the other team's box. A handball in the box set up the penalty kick for Derek, who kicked it off the goalie's shinguards and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

They gave up a goal on a corner kick in the 2nd quarter, when Kelvin shouldered the ball towards the middle of the net, and the ball was kneed it by an opposing player. Tied at 1-1 at halftime, the game was up for grabs.

The offense generated enough pressure to set up a corner kick, and Derek sent a beautiful majestic ball into the center of the box. Luckily it found Tommy, who basically walked the ball into the net, giving St. Mary's the 2-1 lead.

From then on, the team went into a shell and played defensive soccer, not taking many chances and staying back. The defenders held their ground and did enough to keep the other team from evening up the game.

The whistle blew three times, signifying the end of the match. The 7th and 8th graders, winners for the first time in history.
